St. X will open the season hosting Owensboro at 7:30 PM Friday. 

The last meeting was in 2022 where St. X won 28-14.

Based on scrimmages both teams look to have good defenses with St. X only giving up one TD total in the scrimmages against Ballard and Frederick Douglass. Owensboro also held South Warren to one TD. 

Both teams have D1 power 4 conference talent to watch with St. X's WR/DB Marlon Harbin and LB/TE Karsten Busch both Louisville commits and Owensboro's Evan Hampton a Vanderbilt commit and 247 Sports composite rates him the #18 RB in the Nation in his class. 

St. X with returning QB Mason Trimble will be airing it downfield with Marlon Harbin his primary target while mixing in some runs to keep the defense honest.

Owensboro will want to feed Evan Hampton the ball and potentially break a long run which is how Frederick Douglass scored against St. X in their scrimmage. Also, the Owensboro QB can run so is another weapon in the Owensboro arsenal.

Both teams had early exits in the playoffs last year and will be looking to get the season started on the right foot. Also this could be a key RPI factoring game especially for the winner. Who wins between these two state powers?

This game will be streamed on the St. X YouTube page and once the link it gets posted, I'll post it in this thread. All St. X games are also broadcast via radio on WVXW 1450 AM/ 96.1 FM.

Owensboro has some STUDS on their roster. Hampton is no joke and I expect him to have some chunk plays throughout the game, but X looks like they could be the best team in the state this year.

This should be a good game. If the Devils want to stay in this they have to find ways to get the ball in Dillards hands. As talented and good as Hampton is at RB, he’s easier to game plan against and stop/slow down than Dillard is. Especially since St. X will have the obvious advantage on both offensive and defensive lines… O will also need to have all their starters on defense to slow down this St. X offense. 
 

Overall I think this is a mountain too high for the Devils to climb at this point in the season. I just hope we stay injury free as we have another power house in CAL the following week.

Two teams I expect to have great seasons!  I just feel X's offense will be a little more successful on Friday.  As if X loads the box to stop Hampton, can O respond to that.  I think that's a lot to ask at this point of the season, but I expect both teams to play well.  Both have good defenses.

Planning to make this game on Friday!  Love St. X's stadium (sitting on the X side of course and hopefully near @Tigerpride94)!

After what X did to Douglass and after watching the Owensboro passing game and run game after the first series against South, I'm gonna say that Owensboro has a nice team, and they're gonna be tough in 5A, but...

I think Owensboro’s skill players can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the state.  Their line, however, is a work in progress.  St X will more than likely be a bit too much for them in this one, but I do expect Owensboro’s line to improve as the season goes & still be playing in December.

I know very little about each team, but after the Owensboro "thread that would never end" kept me entertained for months I am really interested in how this team does under the new head coach.  I have become a far away closet Red Devil fan.

I’ll be shocked if it’s 4 TD’s or 42-7.  Owensboro has competed twice with St. X lately and both have been really good games.  O held a 14-0 or 14-7 lead the last game.  I believe X tacked on 2 TD’s in the 2nd half to win 28-14 and a Wimsatt-led OHS team went toe to toe until the 4th quarter.  They were driving down 7 and dropped an easy 4th down conversion and St. X went in and scored and Owensboro lost by 13.  X should be favored no doubt always tough.  The Owensboro O-line is undersized on the right, with Hampton playing guard and also the guy playing at RT.  Good technique but it’s going to be tough there.  LT Muster is a man and will be a load though and hopefully the big center is back.  Ganaway at QB can be huge here…just as Wimsatt was very tough for X to contain, I do believe Ganaway willl be as well.  He may not beat Wimsatt in the 100, but I believe his first 10 -20 he would - very quick and agile.  Plenty of speed and capability from Bryant, Dillard, Morris on the outside.  Key for OHS is to churn out 1st downs, move the sticks.  Defense is capable - very good secondary.  My guess is X will try to impose its will running the ball.  We will see how good this Devil defense is - my thought is pretty good so far.

 

Last two times Owensboro led the total yards - but they were really close.  ‘21 game was a heat exhaustion nightmare for both teams and ‘22 O scored once defensively and only 1 time offensively.  Much better QB this time for O than ‘22.  I know very little about X this year…I’m still having Jack Sivori nightmares.
