Tush Push to be Outlawed?

Wasn't that the entire issue behind the USC/Notre Dame game 20 years ago when Bush pushed Leinert into the end zone? It seems like from that point forward not only has it happened more, but it has even seemed to be encouraged. I don't know if it should be allowed or not, but they definitely need to follow the rule, whatever it is.

That was the first time I remember it happening and at the time the commentators said that it was illegal according to rules at the time.

Also, I understand why the "Bush push" didn't catch on.  Seems kinda dirty.  ?

I'm generally in the "if you don't like something, then stop it" camp. This is different, and I don't have a strong reason for it other than the offense already has immense advantages, and it does not add value to the game. I liken it to the Patriots manipulating the eligible vs. ineligible receiver rules several years ago. They were not breaking any rules, but they were breaking the spirit of the game. The NFL put an end to it quickly.

This.

I think it is a matter of time before some QBs doing it get injured.

The same could be said about any football player on any football play. Injuries are very much a part of the game.

Right, but forcing a QB's neck/head forward with a lot of thrust into a bunch of beast men has to be near the top of the potential injury scale.

With the players being in such close proximity to each other to start the play and the max distance that most players move being less than six feet, the kinetic energy is low. While injuries are of course possible, the players being so close to start the play brings the potential much lower than a standard running play.

Only a couple of teams even try it. I'm not sure if the teams whining are whining because they can't run it successfully or because they can't stop it.

The NFL version of the shift.  We can't, or are too lazy to, figure out how to stop it, so let's just outlaw the thing.

A lot of the push (sorry) against the play seems to be from the “we don’t want to see it/it’s not entertaining” camp.  But it will be couched in the player safety argument.

Feels like this is picking up momentum in that everyone is fed up with the tush push. You could say Chris Jones (and the Chiefs) are calling the kettle black given the perceived whistle KC receives, but Sunday might be the tipping point. You have three linemen lined up offsides, players moving early, you can't see what's going on, and again, it adds no value to the game.

Jake Browning suggested his airborne tush-push winning TD might have been illegal against the Jaguars.  Thoughts?

Video? I guess I didn’t pay attention enough on that play. There certainly eagles linemen moving before the snap on the one push for a touchdown.

The main thing I notice about the Eagles when they are doing a tush-push is the center has his head even or most times in front of the ball. That is illegal, while the officials should be able to see that easy once the ball is being snapped is very hard to see anything for example on one tush-push Sunday a Chiefs lineman actually snapped the ball as it was being snapped and the refs did not see it.

This thread reminds me of a story about the late, great Mike Leach. Mike allegedly had to be talked out of putting a little person in the backfield and throwing them over the line of scrimmage during short-yardage situations. Mike was one of a kind.

Looks to me like the Eagles guards are moving before the snap every time.

And to accentuate the possibility of injury on every play, Sean McVay tore his plantar fascia while calling a timeout on Sunday.
