Lou is a good coach and will land somewhere.  But I agree with him being let go.  The defense was consistently mediocre with flashes of really good play.  That side of the ball here needs a new voice.

Wow. So shocking to hear you say that! ?

TE's get beat up.  Playing 92 games in 6 seasons is pretty impressive.

I don't think 17 draft picks spent on defense the past 6 years is neglect.  Most are still on the team.  Their D is young and will be better this year.

Tough to get much lower in defensive ratings.

It’s a low bar for sure.  Just an average defense gets this squad at least to the second round of the playoffs.

About darn time if true.

Since 2020. The bengals have used two first round picks on DEs, and also a 3rd rounder. A 2nd rounder on a DT, and a 3rd rounder on a NT. They have used 4 picks on the secondary in the first two rounds. They have used a second and a third on LBs. All those guys drafted in first three rounds are now guys they are counting on, on defense. Also during that time they made DJ Reader the highest paid DT at that time. Signed one of the best DEs in football in Hendrickson, and best slot at that time in Hilton.

The Bengals haven’t neglected the defense. It simply can’t down to them deciding to pay the offense the big bucks when the rent came due, and use the draft to get defensive players on first 3 rounds.

Now so far that strategy hasn’t paid off, and hence the change at DC. Hoping a new DC does better with younger players than Lou did. So if anything if the defense fails again. Then it’s not the bengals neglecting defense. It’s the Bengals not being good at evaluating and drafting defense. Much like with the Oline.

Have heard the Bengals have historically neglected scouting and traditionally had the fewest scouting staff members in the NFL.

I know that they counted on Dave Lapham to "scout" when he was announcing college games.  Not sure if they still do, nor do I know if he still does college games.

It's still that way.  I counted 4 people related to scouting with the Bengals.  In comparison, the Steelers have at least 18.

That was a comparison I had heard.  Better get the draft right when you are so dependent on 1st contract piglets to balance out the big hogs at the trough.

Thanks mcpapa, probably takes country folk to catch my post.
