They're gonna buy a house and give up all ties to current one that quickly?

Yup, 3-C gonna be pretty blatant at this time if parents aren't changing jobs and they're buying a house further away in a different district.

Who does that in the middle of a school year when they claimed Mason is where they wanted to be to finish their career?

As far as a possible switch in address to try that loop hole, I hope they have some money saved up. Cost of Living in Newport, especially the eastside, is insane.

Even if that were true (not covered by bylaws directly), they would still

1) Must enroll somewhere else THIS WEEK (due to the 20 days into semester bylaw)

2) have a waiver reason

3) have KHSAA be willing to expedite it

4) assuming Mason doesn't sit on paperwork

I don't think all four of those are going to come together so quickly.

Nothing they can do unless they can buy a house and close on it immediately. They have to own the house in the new school district before enrolling. Then the 20 days kicks in after they move. Cannot enroll before moving.

Furthermore, would 3a preclude them going to another school? Does their dismissal from the team fall under 3a? Maybe not.

What if they moved to Cincy? Could they enroll and be deemed eligible at Newport?

You're entitled to think as you would like, of course. But I would encourage you to talk to Tony Watts about what you think.

If Tony Watts is involving himself in any part of the athletics perhaps he is very mis guided as to his role considering the failure of him and the prior superintendent to make any impact on improving the academics.

I want to clarify because perhaps you are not meaning this but what you said leads anyone reading it that Newport as a school system is pursuing the Reeds.

I think that will more than likely come into play if the Reed family continues to pursue other options for Blake and Cayden. What was the exact 'ruling,' so to speak, that AD/Coach Kirk used to back his dismissal of the boys.

I spent a few moments reading through the bylaws on the KHSAA website and it looks like there is a clause that would more than likely prevent them from playing elsewhere. By my own volition I'm not always the best at disseminating legalese. But if I'm reading correctly section 3 of bylaw 6 says that the waiver of ineligibility (the KHSAA's ability to wave off an athlete's requirement to sit after a transfer) is not required if there is documentation that "the student in question or family, before transferring to the new school, expresses dissatisfaction with the philosophy, policies, methods, or actions of a coach or administrator about interscholastic athletics" and also if "the change in schools is to nullify or circumvent a conflict with the philosophy or action of an administrator, teacher, or coach relating to sports." I think this whole situation is a pretty cut and dry example of one, or really both of those instances. Seems to me that it would be more than enough to keep the Reed boys from playing any more this season.

I think you are spot on in your assessment of this.

I'd be surprised as well. Seems Newport is doing just fine with who they have.

Newport would immediately become the next program they create issues in if in fact it would be possible to play this season, which I do not see that as even possible.  That being said, Cayden will be needing a high school to play for next season.

Obviously all the previous stuff leads us to believe they are who they are and they are not changing. But if they got on a talented team maybe they’d mind their role? I certainly wouldn't disrupt my team if I’m Newports head coach. As an outsider looking in they don’t need any extra help and certainly not the potential drama.

So how does it work KHSAA wise when everyone is talking about them transferring literally just to play basketball at a new school?  That not a huge red flag?  What about Dohn Prep?

Dohn Community Prep is a "multi-campus" prep school in Cincinnati that was formed originally as a "school" for home schooled kids to be able to compete on athletic teams. I'm not sure whether or not Dohn is an official OHSAA member, but the OHSAA does not permit out of state athletes on their teams. If Dohn is in the OHSAA, then the Reed family would have to officially move to Ohio in order to have their kids play on their team. With father Adam Reed being (I believe) the manager for an HVAC company in Brooksville, that seems like an awfully huge hurdle for them.

I've seen it happen before. 10 years ago or so the Myers brothers began the year wrestling at Grant county (after the older brother had wrestled at a couple different schools in Ohio the years before), and transferred to Campbell County and were deemed eligible and ended up winning state titles for the Camels. It's been a while and I don't remember the circumstances, but it worked out for them. I do remember it took a few weeks to get approval. So it isn't unprecedented.

Rumor mill last night at my Nephews game was the younger Reed was looking at Newport. Take that with a grain of salt as I have zero connections with anyone and the guy that told me could be getting his info of this site. Also was told outside of basketball the dad is a really nice guy, take that how you will as well.
