What does the KHSAA say about eligibility to play at other schools if a kid is kicked off of a team at another school?

I also was wondering how eligibility would work in this case?

I would think you would have to be immediately eligible anywhere, otherwise that means any school at anytime can point their finger at a child and say you are no longer permitted to play sports.

I don't know about colleges being interested, but Newport Public is pretty interested in them.

Can't go to School B to avoid punishment at School A, so not going elsewhere this season unless they actually move or could claim bullying or something

Punishment and Banishment are not the same thing.

Nope.

Would violate 6-3-D-3

(Aka can't run away because you don't like a coach's or AD's decision)

Just a quick glance at the bylaws and I saw this. Most schools are probably very close to 20 school days into the semester. I wouldn't think they would be eligible to transfer anywhere if that timeline has already passed.

SEC. 4) DEADLINE FOR ENROLLMENT A student shall have legally enrolled as a bona fide full-time undergraduate student no later than twenty (20) school days after the beginning of the semester to be eligible during that semester.

The kids aren't banned from Bracken or Mason.

They could have stayed at Bracken.

They can stay at Mason.

And there's a difference between punishment/banishment and cessation.

No program anymore  (cessation of existing program) allows get out of jail free card.

The program still playing without you does not. No difference than being academically or drug-test ineligible.

Unless I missed it, getting kicked off a team doesn't meet transfer exceptions anywhere in the bylaws.

Not counting snow days, today is day 19 of new semester (unsure if snow days count).

So if they were gonna transfer somewhere else AND still have a valid exception, they would have go do it THIS WEEK

In the "legal system" this would be one of those circumstances that either creates or is guided by "case law" which probably only exists in Commissioner Tackett's mind.

If a school does not allow a student-athlete to play sports that is a special circumstance no matter what "R2D2" says.

I think that will more than likely come into play if the Reed family continues to pursue other options for Blake and Cayden. What was the exact 'ruling,' so to speak, that AD/Coach Kirk used to back his dismissal of the boys.

I spent a few moments reading through the bylaws on the KHSAA website and it looks like there is a clause that would more than likely prevent them from playing elsewhere. By my own volition I'm not always the best at disseminating legalese. But if I'm reading correctly section 3 of bylaw 6 says that the waiver of ineligibility (the KHSAA's ability to wave off an athlete's requirement to sit after a transfer) is not required if there is documentation that "the student in question or family, before transferring to the new school, expresses dissatisfaction with the philosophy, policies, methods, or actions of a coach or administrator about interscholastic athletics" and also if "the change in schools is to nullify or circumvent a conflict with the philosophy or action of an administrator, teacher, or coach relating to sports." I think this whole situation is a pretty cut and dry example of one, or really both of those instances. Seems to me that it would be more than enough to keep the Reed boys from playing any more this season.

Even if that were true (not covered by bylaws directly), they would still

1) Must enroll somewhere else THIS WEEK (due to the 20 days into semester bylaw)

2) have a waiver reason

3) have KHSAA be willing to expedite it

4) assuming Mason doesn't sit on paperwork

I don't think all four of those are going to come together so quickly.

I will say this.  What coach in their right mind would want to take on this dumpster fire?

And they will have to hope that the new school will start and play the boys immediately.  Not sure this late in the season unless they are having a losing season would you want that shake up to your winning line up.

If they were to physically change addresses, does that change things?
