Anyone know how the 7v7 went yesterday against Conner? I got some texts from a Conner friend who said there were only two QB's that competed from CCH. He was pretty sure it was Cash Harney & Emmett Queen. Said Queen threw some absolute dimes.

I know they lost and Dylan Gaiser sprained his ankle therefore, didn't get the chance to play qb. 

7 on 7 is a drill much moreso than a competition or game. It's a lot more about identifying strengths and weaknesses by getting to compete against an opponent that's not from your own squad. Gives us get a fresh look at how the fellas get along when the players on the field aren't necessarily able to anticipate what the other players can do as much as they can in intrasquad drills. We had some great looks on Friday and we had some things we need to get ironed out. As a receiving corps we need to keep working on getting into space and making sure to catch the ball before trying to advance down the field. Tipped balls hurt us on Friday. Definitely looking forward to Dylan being healed up and back on the field for us.

And we routinely do not do what most people would refer to as well in 7 v 7 and we usually do not win.  Last years state runner team got absolutely trounced by Ryle and then we went in beat them in the regular season.  I do not put much stock in 7 v 7’s results as it more about fine tuning and working on getting better and execution.  While we know this team is younger, and younger then we have been in a long long time….they will be electric, exciting and deep at the skills which will keep us competitive.  We have tremendous Sr. Leadership where we need it and in crucial positions to be able to help the youngsters.  A lot of weeks to go to Week 1 and I know those first few weeks are a brutal few weeks, but this team reminds me of the 1991 team, Adam McCormick’s 2nd year at QB, that lost their 4 four games and then went on a tear and made it to the State Semi’s.  With all of our depth at the Skills and QB(Jackson Payne was actually our best looking QB coming out of the first 7 v 7), if we can shore up the trenches there is a ton of reason for some serious optimism at getting back to Kroger Field as @UKato91 posted earlier.  Strapping it soon!  GO COLONELS!!

I've definitely been hearing a lot of good things about how Payne is looking at QB. I watched all of the freshman home games last year, and he was definitely among the stronger freshman quarterbacks I've seen at Cov Cath in a while. He looked to be on a similar level, if not maybe even a small step ahead of where Evan Pitzer was a freshman. I honestly don't envy Coach Eviston's role in having to choose a QB1 from all of the talent he has right now in that position.

Looks like Urti was the #2 kicker at Charlotte Catholic last year behind Roman Hyland, a fellow junior who was averaging 57.2 yards per kickoff and was 4 for 4 on field goals (42 yards was longest), he was also 25 for 26 on PAT's. Hyland is listed as a 4-star kicker by Kohl's Kicking Camps, and ProKicker.com lists him as a 3-star kicker. Aside from his 2023 stats on MaxPreps, I couldn't find anything on Urti or his kicker ratings. MaxPreps shows Urti as playing in 5 games last year. He had 9 kickoffs, averaging 46.7 yards per kick, with his longest kick at 54 yards. He didn't have any field goal attempts, and was 5 for 6 on PAT's. Definitely sounds like Urti could be competing with Weitzel for starting kicker.

Andrew Weitzel was 71 for 76 on PAT's last year, 2 for 4 on field goals. I don't have anything immediately available on what the yardages were on the field goals/attempts., and I'm not sure what Andrew's average yardage was for kickoffs last season. But if folks recall, there were three, maybe four games last year where we were penalized on special teams for kicking the ball out of bounds on kickoffs, so I'm sure that's something Coach Shelton has been working on with Weitzel in the offseason.

Urti has a stronger leg than Weitzel. I'd be very surprised if we don't see Urti at least handling kickoff duties.

I was wondering how Payne looked and if he seems football ready.  I've heard he's been making his rounds on the summer baseball tourney circuit and was wondering if he's trying to do both right now?

I've seen great things for Payne too. I imagine he'll be JV starter and 2nd back up on V to either Cash or Queen.  Some great options for EE!

 

I really like the new team practice t-shirt!  A lot of guys on the team have a dad who wore this emblem.  That's a pretty cool gesture!

I think Queen is the future but Harney might be more ready for the job this year. Queen has the better body, arm strength and anticipation just from observation. I've heard Gaiser isn't gonna be in the QB decision.

Harney, Gaiser and Payne are all significantly better when it comes to mobility, though, and if you look at all of the quarterbacks Coach Eviston has fielded - AJ Mayer, Caleb Jacob, Adam Holtz, Preston Agee, and Evan Pitzer - some were strong and accurate passers, but all of them were strong mobile quarterbacks.

From what I've seen, Queen is fourth in line in terms of his talent as a mobile quarterback. Additionally, from the numerous Elder folks I've talked to, Queen's lack of mobility was what had him playing backup quarterback as a freshman last year rather than JV starter or better, as was apparently the family's hope when they made the move over to Cincinnati. I'll be interested to see if Queen's arm, which is VERY good, gives him enough advantage in Coach Eviston's eyes to surpass the other three quarterbacks' superior mobility from the pocket.

AJ was definitely a pocket passer quarterback that was big and strong and could move. But he dropped back to pass, the other ones weren't nearly the polished passer so he has to find creative ways to use them. In his offense he wants a Point Guard at QB that can distribute it out all places, getting the ball to the playmakers. He adjust each offense to the guy running it but the idea is that. Queen in my opinion fits that mold better than any of them but just might not be developed enough physically. And elder is a whole different animal than anything over her, we are talking about one of the best programs in one of the best leagues in the country. GCL is a top 5-10 league in the country, they are playing big boy ball over there.

Is Queen willing to play anything else if he doesn't get the QB nod?  Or is he QB only?

I'm not sure, but I don't know that he's ever played anything aside from quarterback.

That explains why he wasn't in the Conner 7v7. Hopefully it's not too bad of a sprain. Those can linger. Gaiser was a big part of the D last year.
