Easily a top five game in the history of Putnam Stadium. Some of the old timers might even say it's #1.

Late November, state semifinal, cold, suffering from a turkey hangover, defensive war of attrition, overtime... basically right up my alley.

I was at that game.  Ashland was given 3-4 opportunities to kick a winning field goal at the end of regulation to win that game.  Coach Ray was losing his mind!

That game deserves its own thread. Very physical matchup where both teams left it all on the field. I believe Ashland had three losses coming into that game, but they were a handful and much better than most CovCath fans were expecting.

This AAA semifinal would be a good topic for another thread, maybe the '88 season too, though this does bring out the Chet Arthur History Club nerd in me.

Some context:

Pregame records Cov Cath 12-1; Ashland 7-6.

Ashland players of note?

Among the '88 Colonel personnel: Dan Ruh (no "e"), Paul Hladon, Brian Williams, Dave Wilson, Kevin Butler, Chris Wagner, Scott Spivey, Jim Danneman, Brian Murphy, Dave McGee, Gary Snyder ... O-line, Defense? ...

Can we stop this nonsense?  Ohio football... yay... Ohio football.  The fact is their are a LOT of NKY kids who can individually compete in Ohio.  Cam Thomas and Maddox Arnold come immediately to mind

Let’s refrain from throwing the Cincinnati area in there. There are several receivers over there that would be fits for every starting cornerback in NKY. Yet alone a 5’10 sophomore starting for his first time. We get the point no need to exaggerate! Competitive against NKY isn’t any where near being competitive against Cincy. CCH passing game hasn’t been tested on that level, let’s be real.

Can we stop this nonsense?  Ohio football... yay... Ohio football.  The fact is their are a LOT of NKY kids who can individually compete in Ohio.  Cam Thomas and Maddox Arnold come immediately to mind.  Two facts here:  1.  Braylon Miller would have started somewhere for every Ohio D1 Region 4 Qualifier.  Same with Brach Rice, Brody Benke, Willie Rodriguez, Austin Alexander, Cam O'Hara... the list goes on.  2.  Dylan Geisler would have started JV for every Ohio D1 Region 4 Qualifier (which is what 95% of all Ohio Sophomores do).  Ohio football TEAMS beat NKY TEAMS because of numbers.  They have vastly more numbers which create deeper teams and a lot of times deeper one platoon teams.  But, NKY kids can play over there... don't kid yourself.

We need video of the OT. Sounds awesome.

It’s been fun watching Dylan Gaiser develop into a star this year. Nearly every game he has an eye-popping play that he can add to his highlight reel. Glad we’ll have him for a couple more years.

Looking forward to seeing more of Dylan Gaiser on the opposite side of the ball next year. He’s fast, smart, athletic and makes things happen. He’s had a great year and is fun to watch!!

Lasalle RB Cohen Kreidler started all season he is from Taylor Mill but now lives in Cincy.

After reading through the Ashland vs. Harrison County thread I hope the CovCath coaches are preaching "cooler heads will prevail" this week. I'd also let the officials know the behavior that was displayed by Ashland the previous week.

CovCath 6 - Ashland 0 OT

Story from the Daily Independent.

I think Barry Jones was a sophomore lineman for CovCath that year.

He is a Top 5 player in school history and I will forever die on that hill!

Definitely for a different thread, but would love to hear your top 5.

I see Barry all the time, it almost looks like he could still play.

Herald-Leader high school sportswriter Jared Peck gives slight edge to CovCath.

Sophomore Zach Brooks is eligible for this game, I believe, at WR/DB. His last varsity game at Holy Cross last year was on November 4th, so that means he's sat for one year off from any varsity action. Any word on whether or not he's a possibility to see in the game for the Colonels?

My brother was starter on special teams as a sophomore and his 90 class won state. 89 season we lost in regional to Belfry 34-14 the day after we lost our dad to cancer. That game comes in as #2 by most accounts #1 is 90 semifinal verses Bell Co 19-14 win. It’s truly hard to figure out all the great games that have been played in the old stadium you got the mid 60’s and mid 70’s teams having several great games. We won probably as much as we lost some but you always knew you left everything out on the field.

I don’t always love comparing scores because matchups can be different, but the Cov Cath/SK game was not competitive. If Ashland was in a one score game with them, I can’t imagine this not being a three score win for CCH, especially being at home and the travel for Ashland.

Did Peck give his basis for that or was it more of an opinion only?
