  • The poll is 30-0 CCH right now so I am guessing it hasn't been too tough for anyone...

Can we stop this nonsense?  Ohio football... yay... Ohio football.  The fact is their are a LOT of NKY kids who can individually compete in Ohio.  Cam Thomas and Maddox Arnold come immediately to mind

Did Peck give his basis for that or was it more of an opinion only?

Peck listed the scores in games with common opponents and mentioned the difference in the SK games. I’m guessing he is basing it on the Herald-Leader Cantrall Ratings.

Cantrall Ratings: Ashland Blazer (80.8), Covington Catholic (86.5).

Here are all of Peck’s 4A picks:

West

Logan County

Franklin County

DeSales

Paducah Tilghman

East

Johnson Central

Covington Catholic

Corbin

Boyle County

I sure would like to know how Cantrall came up with that.  To me, those teams are no where near that close.

I think the computers have trouble knowing what to do with blowout wins. For instance, this year CovCath’s district games didn’t tell us anything about the Colonels other than they were way ahead of the rest of the district. CalPreps exclude these types of games from its ratings math, but maybe Cantrall doesn’t and it ends up skewing the numbers. I can remember some years when Bell County was in 3A with CovCath and the Bobcats were way better than their Cantrall rating. Maybe strength of schedule played into that. For instance Bell seemingly beat their district foes 56-7 every year, but the computers don’t know if Bell pulled their starters in the 2nd quarter or the 4th quarter. All I know is that Log Mountain in late November is not a fun place to play.

Sophomore Zach Brooks is eligible for this game, I believe, at WR/DB. His last varsity game at Holy Cross last year was on November 4th, so that means he's sat for one year off from any varsity action. Any word on whether or not he's a possibility to see in the game for the Colonels?

Zac is very athletic and a great football player. I would imagine that he will at least get in for special teams.

Looking forward to seeing more of Dylan Gaiser on the opposite side of the ball next year. He’s fast, smart, athletic and makes things happen. He’s had a great year and is fun to watch!!

Ditto. He is an absolute wizard when the play breaks down and will be a migraine for opposing defenses next year. Dylan “Houdini” Gaiser.

Anyone have a link to watch the game? I got Ashland winning by 1.

Cov Cath's Colonel Athletic Network livestreams all of our home games. It's a $10 broadcast ticket...and a very high quality broadcast.

I'll be watching the broadcast tonight and doing my in-game updates from home. I had hernia repair surgery on Monday (a whole barrel of fun, lemme tell ya), so as much as I'd like to be there in person, things are still a little too sore to be hanging around a crowd in a stadium.

Essentially every time I hear about Ashland football, I can't help but think about one of Ashland's players from the 1997 season when we faced the Tomcats in the first round of the 3A playoffs. On defense, Ashland ran a 3-4 front, and #5 was one of their outside linebackers, and then their base offense was a power-T. #5 always lined up in the backfield exclusively as a blocking back, because he was missing his right arm from the elbow on down. I still think back, and I don't know that I've ever watched any high school football player who went harder on every play than he did. It was genuinely inspiring to my 16 year old self just watching him do everything he did, and that moment wasn't lost on me. A couple of our coaches pointed it out to us in the locker room too, "If you all want to have a good look at what it really means to accomplish whatever you want by putting your mind to something and putting forth the effort to achieve it, then you fellas need to take a good look at #5 on the other side of the field. And you guys watch how hard he works."

I got to shake hands at the end of football games with a lot of cool people over the years, including a bunch of guys who eventually made their way to the NFL, but I still think that guy - Ashland's #5 from 1997 whose name I've never even learned - is my personal favorite.

Could someone fill us in on special teams, particularly the kicking units - personnel, stats, etc. I have a nagging feeling about this game.

Is RO calling his shot on a kick return and or FG shoot out?

My grandpa used to say, "Son, wear a belt and suspenders and you're always covered (or something to that effect)." ?

Preparation is half the battle. I'm a safety first kind of guy.

Ashland's kicker, Jake Sexton, is 41-51 on PATs this season, and no attempted field goals. They've also had four other guys who have been brought in for PAT kicks, totalling 9-13 on PATs among the four. Ashland also has successfully made 7 two-point conversions this season. (No clue how many two-point conversions they've attempted.) Sexton is a senior, and looks like he hasn't attempted any field goals in his two seasons as place kicker.

Cov Cath's kicker, junior Andrew Weitzel, is 61-66 on PATs this season, and is 2-3 on field goals. If memory serves, all three of his field goal attempts were in the 30/35 yard range. The Colonels have successfully made 3 two-point conversions this season. Last year Weitzel was 1-3 on field goals, so it looks like neither team goes for field goals much.
