Who’s is the best coach in the state to NOT win a state Championship? I expect some interesting answers. Have they not won one due to talent cycles? Just plain luck? Doesn’t mean that they won’t win one. It’s just super hard to win one. 

Doug Charles Lexington Christian Academy. 

Alvis Johnson at Harrodsburg is the name that popped into my head when I read this.  Made it to the title game 3 times.  Produced a ton of talent and a few NFL players. 

Twice ran into Mike Yeagle led Beechwood Tigers. He was a legit legend as a coach. Hard to believe they couldn’t win one in those two years with the Great Dennis Johnson. He made every tackle it seemed like. 

John Cain at Somerset was another good one.  He took Somerset to the state finals 4 times but just couldn't get over the hump.  In addition, he had a couple of teams that just had some horrible luck.  In 1982, the Jumpers lost one game, to Boyle County 28-27.  That was back in the day when only one team made the playoffs out of every district.  Somerset did not have the tiebreaker and didn't get to go to the playoffs.  However, they did go to Corbin after the Boyle County loss and beat the Redhounds by a couple of scores.  That Corbin team went on to win the 2A championship.

Mark Browns run at JH was historic, he has to be on the list. Between a failed 2 point conversion vs St. X, hook and ladder vs BG and losing in a state championship game it is absolutely wild he did not get one championship while here. 

I was kind of thinking more current coaches.

Tim Mattingly what he has done at central that no one came close to doing in the schools history. He has done with a school in a large county with multiple high schools that splits up the talent.
