Guru, I was not impressed with Highlands at all. Boyle was without there starting QB and still won this game.

Well I had to hit the delete button. I was ready to send but I’m going to do the ole sleep on it response on this. I may get in trouble or possibly get others in trouble. Leaving this one alone. 

I wouldn’t say he’s done but I will say his chances would have been far better remaining in 5A this season.

I think Highlands needs to let the cake bake and let this season finish out before making any decision regarding coach. Not like they lost to chump team plus was on the road at tough place to play.

It is really tough to find excellent football coaches. The Bluebirds have one. 

I have old guy bias… but experience is underrated. 

August of 1989 or 90… remember driving to Hindman one Saturday morning to meet Bob to get a VHS on Paul Rains’ Hazard team. We go back a long way. I can still see him sitting on that front porch, exhausted , holding on to that video. 
 

Guys w/ that type of longevity and elite success are special.  You get one, think I would keep him.

And … absolutely, he will still make mistakes & some times big ones. When you get bombarded w/ big decisions, rapid fire… there will be times you mess up. It happens to every coach. If one ever tells you not to him, he is lying.  

 

We are just talking high school football. Why talk about getting rid of a football coach. Highlands is 3-1, they will be in the mix for a state championship.  The number 1 goal of a high school coach is to mold the boys to men.  Get individuals to play as a team and represent the community.  Get the players ready for the next level if they chose.  If they win games that is a plus.  Everyone that is wanting him gone should go to some of the surrounding schools and see how much it is a struggle to field a team.  Highlands has great facilities, great community and great coaches.

Just enjoy the process.

I guess the question is: What was Bob Sphire hired to do?

IMO, the consensus was that he was going to bring Highlands "back," which I think to most means winning state titles. I'm not sure anyone who was looking for those results expected it to take five (or more) years, but we've also seen the unrealistic expectations from some of the Highlands faithful over the years. 

From an outside perspective, it definitely seems like some are growing increasingly more impatient, especially considering that we're seeing the same issues haunt the Birds over and over.

His resume speaks for itself; he's a great football coach. 

But is he good enough to get Highlands what they want? Or another way to ask it; is he the right person to do it?

I believe he is. Highlands is a great job. As is with a lot of great jobs, you better have a thick skin and a true confidence/belief in what you do. Bob Sphire has both of those.

No doubt. Any successful coach is going to be good at blocking the outside noise. It's a requirement. 

I’ve said this a million times, but the expectations to have the program like it was under Mueller are unrealistic. Did they win a lot before Mueller? Very much so, but they never won more than 2 in a row and they didn’t win before like they did with Mueller. Sphire has them in back to back semi final games with a chance to win 2 years ago. Before that it was what 2015?
