Danville High School Collapse?

Featured Replies

Looks like Danville Is in a very very bad place, the amount of kids transferring out is alarming. Can anyone enlighten me as to why? Is it the coaching? The teaching? The administration? All of the above? I’ve been watching this over the last few years and it’s progressively gotten worse.

  • FWIW, Q had an offer from EKU (as a freshman) before leaving Garrard.  They also sent another kid to EKU on scholarship this year. Your entire second paragraph is just false.

Revolving door of administration is at the forefront from an outsider perspective. It’s been on a steady decline since the end of the Harp era.

Danville is a mid 2A school based on enrollment numbers. They’ve lost a few kids the past few years. They’ve gained a few kids the last few years (Bixler and Barnes). The schools in no way collapsing like some are making it out to be. It’s now next man up for the Ads. They’ve done it to themselves so now they have to face it. Those wishing for a merge, it’s not going to happen.

Could it be as simple as suburban sprawl, like most small city schools? Once The great Sam Harp moved on and Chuck Smith and Boyle Co kept winning, it wasn't a big deal to move out of Danville proper because Boyle was now a big time player in the state?

This is a big part of it.  Danville is landlocked and its tax base is hemmed in.  Meanwhile, Boyle County has had a lot of growth over the last two decades and that has funneled more money, resources, and tax revenue to the county school at the expense of the city.

Danville hasn't made its job easier through a constant churn of administration, though.  Since 2010 they have had four superintendents and the high school has had seven principals.  It is tough to build continuity when you have those changes going on.  If they can find some people who are going to stay long-term and build a good foundation, then I'm confident they can revive things.  As DearToday notes, the whole system is not falling apart.

I'll continue to defend Clevenger because his slide in wins-losses after the 2017 title was due to LCA and Somerset fielding amazing teams in 2A and that district was death for a few years, compounded by the horrible "play in your district for the first two rounds of the playoffs" format.  He had talent coming up - some of whom are now at Boyle and winning them titles - and would have had the Ads making deep playoff runs this decade.  Getting rid of him was a mistake and the community is still divided over that.

Larry Vaught had a very good article, maybe more on his concerns of the DIS administration when they let Clevenger go. I know there is more to the story than what has hit surface level, but Clevenger hit a home run when he was hired by Somerset!

The RB who is rumored to leave DHS and either be at Boyle or LCA - again, rumors.

Who knows, but with the turnover of administration in the Danville Schools tells you a lot. You can't change the quality of the community by using the same broken myths that have displayed a failure to produce the Winning Football Culture of old, not just football but in general in the system. Times have changed, people and kids have changed. It is hard to be tough on kids when you don't win or relate to the kids - therefore, you must build relationships with the kids/families if you want to have a culture that succeeds, IMHO. Transferring is easy, but finding a way to have people, kids, staff, teachers and administrators to buy in and fight for what is right, well - it starts with leadership and maybe DIS will get it together, but it doesn't look so bright currently.

Good luck to all that are in this together and hope nothing but the best for the students, staff, community that want to see Danville be the best it can in all areas, not just athletics/football.

Are you saying that the RB at Danville has not enrolled at Boyle County?

The program had been revived until the firing of Clevenger. That's when everything started to fall a apart. So, to point to the original question, a lack of consistent administration has killed that school culture.

They need Haddix to take a college job.

Not a rumor.  He HAS enrolled at Boyle County.

Even if Haddix did, I'm sure Boyle would find another really good hire.  They didn't do well immediately after Chuck Smith departed for UK but quickly changed course and since then they've done well between Larry French, Chuck 2.0, and now Haddix.

Agree, but the two prior coaches are not as "new age" and active on Social Media.  No surprise, when these moves occur "Ring announcements" are made...

I am sure that is exactly what happened. That Boyle County specifically timed it up that they would make their ring announcements when a player is looking to enroll somewhere else. Shouldn't coaches be active on social media and promote their program? or is it only bad when a coach does it and the team has been ultra successful? Just trying to understand.

Maybe the kids and their families want better opportunities. I do not see anything wrong with that. Plus a coach cannot make a player and their family move to the school district so they can be eligible.

It is a good PR move...

The rings were announced because the rings had arrived.
