Jr Andrew Dodson who was injured Friday night in their Spring Game/Practice, has passed away.

Please add his parents, family, teammates, friends and our community to your prayers.

Just an unspeakably awful situation. God bless the young man, his family, his teammates, coaches, teachers, and friends. Heartbreaking story.

What exactly happened? Everyone seems mum on it.

Just terrible.  So sad.  

As a coach or person closely associated with athletic programs this is your worse nightmare.  

Each player who signs on to a football program does so to experience the thrills of being a part of a team, running out onto the field and playing under the Friday night lights, making memories for the rest of his life.  He and his family realize that their are risks associated with the glory, but never expecting something as tragic as this.  The kid in that picture could be any of our players on a given team.

So sorry for his family and the Pulaski community.  Our absolute worse nightmare.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association reported Monday that a Pulaski County High School football player who sustained a brain injury in a game Friday has died.

Alan Dodson said his son Andrew Dodson was running the ball in the Pulaski County varsity football spring Maroon and White game when he was tackled by a teammate. “It was not a violent hit or helmet-to-helmet. It was a simple, clean tackle,” said Dodson, noting Andrew was wearing a helmet. “His head hit the turf, and Andrew suffered blunt-force trauma to the brain,” Dodson said Sunday night. “He had a major surgery to relieve the pressure and has never awakened. He has been fight(ing) for his life on total life support.”

This is so tragic, I couldn’t imagine the pain this family and community can be dealing with. As a father with a son who plays football, this type of injury would never cross my mind, let alone the thought of him passing away because of it. God bless everyone on the team and in the community.

This is really, really sad. It's the kind of thing that makes you realize how quickly and easily it could all be over for anyone at any time.

I've also had a couple of people reach out to me asking if I've heard anything about aide rendered by the coaching staff in the incident. It sounds like there is some question about whether or not anyone on the Pulaski County coaching staff on hand had up-to-date CPR or state-mandated safety training. I really, REALLY hope that doesn't turn into an issue for Coach Hines and company.

If this is true, it WILL become an issue. If you are going to coach at ANY level, you have to have this training updated and current. Having the training may not have saved this players life, but not having it made the chances exponentially higher that he wouldn't survive. And really, there is no excuse both on a personal and administrative level for coaches to holding practice without having current training in place. If these trainings weren't in place for spring practice, they likely weren't in place during the season either, as the safety training is typically valid only for the duration of the current school year and needs to be renewed annually. Also one would have to question if aid wasn't rendered, was there no athletic trainer on site? Would they really hold a full contact, live football practice without a trainer available? I would find it hard to believe that all of this would be true. Hopefully it isn't.

They can deny or no comment or decline requests for documentation all they want

If they were indeed up to date and this is a clerical/online error, providing the documentation should ease that.

If they are in violation, they should NOT have been coaching. Period. KHSAA has stated as much in bylaws PDF.
