Best Regional Tournaments in the State?

Featured Replies

Just curious, and figured we could have some great conversations on this. Taking everything into account such as attendance, atmosphere, close games, miracle runs, and talent, what regional tournament that you have attended has been the best?

8th Region at Henry County is pretty awesome.

  • I've been to six different regionals over the years, they all were great, really can't pick a favorite.  When the 11th played at the Frankfort Convention Center, that was always a nice venue to watch

  • Not quite back to the 50s, but Henry County has hosted every 8th Region tournament since 1963. Prior to that it was at Shelby County (61-62), Oldham County (55, 57, 59-60), and Owen County (53, 56, 58

The 10th Region in the Fieldhouse is (IMO) the best atmosphere in the state.

HOMER!

*And yes, I was partial to the 9th when it was at Holmes.*

12th Region uses Lincoln Co. and Pulaski Co. as their host sites.  Both are nice facilities, but I think the atmosphere for a championship game @ Lincoln Co. creates an electric feel where the gym is a little smaller.  Pulaski gym is top notch though!

I wonder where they'll play the 11th Region next year when EKU is being remodeled?

Interesting, I wasn't aware that EKU was going to be down.  Where will EKU play?  I'm guessing Madison Central might have the biggest gym in the 11th.  Another option might be Memorial.

I’ve been to 4th, 8th, and 16th.
8th is by far the best of those 3.  WKU and Morehead were too big.

I tend to agree, though I also feel that it lends itself to the feeling of a big time game when they're there.  I will say that when the 4th has a real big-time matchup, like they did those years ago when Chane Behanan and George Fant matched up, the atmosphere in one of those is tough to match.  I get goosebumps thinking about the roars.

I like to give Mason County supporters a hard time about the homecourt advantage, but I imagine the 10th at the Fieldhouse is something truly special.

I saw those two go toe to toe, it was a District game.  Big time basketball.  I think BG won and then lost to them in the regional.

I wonder if Memorial Coliseum would be an option.  They used to play the All A there.

Memorial is undergoing a big renovation next year too.

The Owensboro Sportscenter is a classic place to watch a game down here in the 3rd.  The action has been a little down the past few years but as far as venue goes, they don't get much better than the Sportscenter.

When the 5th Region is played at the Roby Dome at Marion County it has some crazy atmospheres. Lighting is dim everywhere besides the court and just it being a dome makes for a unique experience
