Best Regional Tournaments in the State?

When the 5th Region is played at the Roby Dome at Marion County it has some crazy atmospheres. Lighting is dim everywhere besides the court and just it being a dome makes for a unique experience

The only time I've ever been to the 5th Region was at Marion County for semifinal night. Was a great experience, great arena!

8th Region at Henry County is pretty awesome.

  • I've been to six different regionals over the years, they all were great, really can't pick a favorite.  When the 11th played at the Frankfort Convention Center, that was always a nice venue to watch

  • Not quite back to the 50s, but Henry County has hosted every 8th Region tournament since 1963. Prior to that it was at Shelby County (61-62), Oldham County (55, 57, 59-60), and Owen County (53, 56, 58

Obviously my home region being the 8th…. I'm not sure there is much better than semifinal night at “The Roy”. Majority of the time it is 4 bigger schools that bring ginormous crowds, leaving little to no seats in the 5,000+ capacity gymnasium!
However, quarterfinal crowds can at times be somewhat underwhelming. If you get certain matchups from smaller schools, or teams in the 32nd district there we be a good amount of empty seats and not the same environment you’ll see during semifinal and finals nights.

If you have not experienced one of these games at “The Roy” in late February/early March, you most definitely need to! I would recommend getting there early, if not you will have over a mile walk down the side of the road to get to the gym lol. Parking fills up quick, as do the stands.

9th is pretty awesome every year at NKU, you know your gonna see some talented ball.

Talent in the 9th is one of the best in the state, however I am just not a huge fan of the big college arenas being used for regional tournaments. It is cool for the players getting to play on it, but I feel the atmosphere is not very good due to the arena being so big. Borderline impossible for the place to get close to capacity for a high school game.

The 10th Region in the Fieldhouse is (IMO) the best atmosphere in the state.

One of, if not the coolest gyms in the state! The wooden dome feature is so neat, and I could only imagine what that place is like when filled up. I hope to find my way over there when it is hosted by them again.

Why does the 10th not host it there every year? Would avoid situations like last year when they had to travel all the way over to Holmes.

Here is a look at the 8th region. Henry County has hosted it since the 1950's. The whole backside from where the picture is taken is seats as well. 1384a74e-e38f-4e72-a625-a865abf27b7e-SOHS-SKHS13_Sam.thumb.webp.7292c89258b064a6c4c4a40830fa3736.webp

I tend to agree, though I also feel that it lends itself to the feeling of a big time game when they're there.  I will say that when the 4th has a real big-time matchup, like they did those years ago when Chane Behanan and George Fant matched up, the atmosphere in one of those is tough to match.  I get goosebumps thinking about the roars.

I like to give Mason County supporters a hard time about the homecourt advantage, but I imagine the 10th at the Fieldhouse is something truly special.

Yes it is. I tell folks it was more exciting to win the 10th at Mason Co.(against Mason Co) than to win a first round game at Rupp.

Some of the big games throughout the years though has brought in 5-10k, a lot of basketball junkies up here that don’t make the stadium feel so big!

Great crowds!

The 10th at Mason County is always absolutely awesome and should be great this year.  The 10th fan excitement  has been diluted over the last years by moving it to Montgomery, Clark (both great gyms) and Covington Holmes (which is a crime). But its only fair and it is what it is.

I’ve been to 4th, 8th, and 16th.
8th is by far the best of those 3.  WKU and Morehead were too big.

I’ve been to of the 16th. When you have 2 good teams/bigger schools. Say Ashland and Boyd in the 90s it was almost full .

And since the 2000-01 season, they have 10 appearances and only 2 wins in the regional tournament. If they were a powerhouse in the region would people be pushing for the site to be moved?

Its an interesting question. Somewhat similarly, the 12th Region has rotated between Lincoln County and Pulaski County since 2005. Lincoln has won four titles, Pulaski has won one, and only twice has it happened on their home floors. Both are always good but there doesn't appear to be much call for change in the region (and there shouldn't be) because both are large gyms, right on the main highway that runs through the region, and close to nearly every school.

Henry is for the most part in the middle of the 8th region, but is not relatively close to the interstate. I believe most schools are within an hour drive, and with the area that the 8th covers it is not a bad drive for anyone. For example, it was a 90-minute drive tonight for Spencer County to go play Walton-Verona.

Henry County is undoubtedly the best venue for the tournament in the region. There is not any college arenas or special venues within it to host it either. If there was, I would still be pushing for "The Roy" to host it annually.

The only downfall with the location is the parking. On semi final and championship night there will be cars parked along the road for miles. I am sure this is a common occurrence with many regional tournaments if I had to guess.

With capacity, there isn't another school that really comes close to this gym inside of the 8th region. According to google the gym holds 5,400 people. Off the top of my head I would think that Collins is the second biggest gym in the region and it doesn't touch 5,400 in capacity.
