If it was released at a football game a couple years ago I'm sure alot of people didn't hear about it. Now that Florida holds both titles it is being brought back up as a reminder to those who didn't know.

January 10, 200719 yr But it's a wasted argument... Again, nobody is going around proclaiming UK was the first to do anything. It's just something to think about... A conversation piece. ESPN didn't pick up the story and run with it, because it's a non-issue. I love UK as much as anybody on here, and to be quite honest I'm not sure what the big deal is. Nobody is arguing the point that the "title" doesn't count, it's basically just people trying to figure out what the fuss is about a little article that was written. The logic behind it all is a little flawed, but I just can't figure out what the big deal is, and why it's left behind such a huge path of ruffled feathers.

UK isn't out proclaiming themselves as the first to do this, if they were every major media outlet in the country would run with it. An editor, for a UK website wrote an article, containing facts, about a season in which UK won a basketball title and would have finished 1st in a major college football poll in the same year.. Nothing more, nothing less. In fact, the article list 3 other teams that could also proclaim theirselves national champions that year. You don't see them hanging any banners for it and you don't see them printing t-shirts proclaiming such. Truth is, most of us would have never even read nor heard of this article had a UL fan not dug it up and shed a tear over it.:sleep:

January 10, 200719 yr How is this any different than North Carolina claiming they have 5 titles, because they have begun counting the Helms Trophy. I think that they are counting one of those, maybe two. Dont see anyone crowing over UNC's title claims? UK won two titles outside of the 7 NCAA ones. So should they have 9 titles? This would be my reply as well. Living in Tar Hole Country I hear about 5 titles all the time and laugh. What is equally sad is that UNC did not even start that stuff until Duke won their 3rd NCAA title in 2001. If UK has officially tried to push this than they are just as ridiculous as the Tar Hole Nation. IF there is a difference it would be I have seen shirts and hats with the Helms titles listed for UNC. I haven't seen a shirt or hat yet with this accomplishment for UK.
January 10, 200719 yr No one has asked how UK can claim such a thing and what are their merits? There were polls in 1950 and because of the upset loss to UT in the finale UK finished 10-1 and ranked #6. After they upset 30 straight game winner Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl they could have claimed to be the best in the nation and made a valid claim but polls during those days were not issued after the bowl games but after the regular seasons. BTW, for the poster who wondered at the legitimacy of UK's BAsketball NCAA titles in the 40's when the NIT was still a great tourney the AP poll of '49 also had UK ranked #1 regardless of what the NIT tourney crowned. Also, during the early 40's the NIT and NCAA champ played each other for a Red Cross benefit. The result was the NCAA champ won more of those contests than the NIT champ. That coupled with the point shaving scandals drew teams to the NCAA more than the NIT and the Madison Square Garden crowd.

January 12, 200719 yr --While Florida fans will deservedly be obnoxious until early April as the dream of dreams has come true holding the national titles in both basketball and football, it might not have been a first. Kentucky is listed in the NCAA record book as the 1950 football national champion after winning the Sugar Bowl over Oklahoma. Back in the day, national champions were crowned before the bowls. January 12, 200719 yr This claim is bogus. UK wasn't crowned national champion by any of the services that did so at the time. They were "crowned" champs a few years ago by a service that didn't crown a champ back in 1950 (I don't think Sagarin even existed in 1950). Claiming a championship 50 years after the fact isn't legit. No ifs, ands or buts. Did they get cheated? Maybe. Are they champs? No.
