What does "young" have to do with being the right person at the right time?

Exhibit 1: Noel Rash ... Probably one of the more "energetic" coaches in this state ... Pretty sure he is pushing 60. I doubt anyone younger can bring the same type of energy he brings (not to mention there are 2 guys on his staff who are 70 who bring more energy than the overwhelming majority of coaches I have seen in the last 40 years).

Point being ...Scott should find the right person ...youth and energy are byproducts of great coaches ...not mandatory hiring points. Experience and the ability to lead and most importantly ...getting kids to do things they don't think they can do are traits few (if any) young coaches have mastered.

For the life of me I do not understand why schools like this don't pound the pavement, contact successful head coaches to see if they have assistants who are interested in being head coaches. Business as usual = waiting to see who applies ...then the same committee garbage (knowing the principal has ultimate hiring and firing authority). Which continues to produce the same results.

So, not a shot at you, Conch .... Just not so sure I agree.

True. I think the “young” really equates (at least in my mind) with new, fresh ideas and a different mindset. While Scott has experienced more success in the last decade than in their entire history, they’ve been unable to take that next step. And I think they really need to hit a home run with this hire, and bring someone in who’s experienced that next level of success. Whether they be young, old, or whatever.

Ken is a great coach...he knows how to get players excited about football, that's for sure. It seems like he's been pretty all-in at New Cath, though.

IMO, Scott needs to get creative with this hire, find someone young who can bring a whole new energy and culture to the program.

Loyalty is admirable, but won’t necessarily win games.

Will that person apply for the job? If you are a top assistant in a successful program do you want to move to an average program and try to get it going..... especially since they are moving to a pretty good 5A district.

I agree with this. Maybe I shouldn’t use “young”, but new.

That would depend on a lot of things. First, is if you want to be a head coach you have to start somewhere, and it's not often at the top of the food chain. Second, you have to look at things like location, facilities, community etc. All things I would say Scott ranks pretty highly. Is there a lot of work to do...absolutely. But it's all upside. Expectations aren't super high, so if you do well, it's a feather in your cap. If you don't it's not a death sentence.

Good question. Maybe, maybe not. Not sure who has applied, but strictly based off of names mentioned (regardless if they actually applied or not) in this thread that fit the definition of a top assistant in a successful program would leave us with:

Dan Woolley- Simon Kenton

Alex Shelton- CovCath

Would be interesting to see a list of assistants from other schools who have applied. Especially those looking to be a first time head coach, because as @rjs4470said, you have to start somewhere.

I would be shocked if Woolley applied. I don't think anything has changed in his situation (family time) that would make him want to jump back in the saddle. Plus he's been there, done that, and bought the t shirt. I think he's perfectly happy doing what he's doing. Also, you'll never see who's applied.  The only way you'll know if someone applied is if they announce it. Most applicants, especially current head coaches already have jobs, and may not want people to know (specifically the people they work for) they are out there looking. I'd never want to coach at a school that leaked the applicant list. And we should probably stop randomly throwing names out there unless we know that person is interested and applied.

Totally agree on both points. Just mentioning the names that appeared in the thread to fit the definition regardless of the probability of it happening.

And for sure, and it shouldn’t be leaked. Especially in a situation where it may hurt someone’s current position. More so just stating how interesting it would be if the applications were a matter of public record, I think we’d see some interesting names for interesting jobs and have much to talk about on BGP!

I think Danny is waiting for an opportunity to get in the door at Beechwood.

Hearing tomorrow is the day.

Interesting assessment. I wonder how long it will be before that happens?

And going back to Scott won’t help him do that.

I’d assume this is why weights were canceled on Monday.
