Teams Opting to Play Up 2023-2026

Featured Replies

If they do it the way they did last time, if someone is offered opportunity to play down and they decline, then they are counted essentially as having played up in class. And they proceed on until they find someone who will play down, until they have a number of teams playing down equal to those playing up.

  • I don't know, the more you move up, the tougher it gets.

  • I don’t think it’s that big step for Pikeville. Would like to see them and Beechwood play.

  • Look for Barren Co and Warren Central to "stay or go" together.  If one goes, the other is in a district with BG, SW, and Gwood.  Both leave for 6A, they are likely in the Hardin Co. district.  If bot

Hearing Bardstown to 4A and Lincoln County to 5A.

I do believe Bardstown will ask to play up in 4A.

I have no idea either but is it limited to the bottom three schools or will the KHSAA keeping going up from the bottom to ask teams if they want to play down?

In the email I received It said they would do the request no more than three times. I think that means they would allow three to play up if they can get three to play down?  Or that could mean they will only request the bottom three and after that if they don't get a yes then the playing up requests end. It is a bit confusing.

What is the reasoning behind Bardstown wanting to move up?

Once they actually release the district pairings will they give teams another chance to move?

Traditionally there hasn’t been an option to move up at that point, but you have been allowed to petition for a move to a different district due to geographical hardships.

So it is quite reasonable to think that even though the desire was 39 teams in each of the middle classes (2A-5A), it is possible that some classes will have more or less based on the number that choose to play up.

It certainly seems that way.

Belfry is requesting to play up in 3A from what I understand.

Nelson County and Elizabethtown are moving up to 4A, and I'm sure the thought of being placed in a district with Central, CAL, and Desales was not an insignificant factor.

If I follow the comments and read this right:

- a team requesting to play up can still be allowed to play up if no team opts to drop down

- only the bottom three in a class have the possibility of getting a choice to play down

- if no team opts to play up, then no team in the class above can play down

Do I have all that right?

Can geography/travel concerns be used by a team to request they be allowed to play down a class regardless of any other circumstance?

I do not believe you can request to play down for geographic reasons.

I’m thinking that Central in now 3A.

They are. They're coach said as much in a Listserv email a few weeks back.

Does anyone know when the KHSAA is going to have its draft or final district?
