I switch it up.  Left/right start.  Another day right/left.  Sometimes sock/sock; other times sock/shoe.  Never shoe/sock!

There was a hilarious bit in an episode of All in the Family about this.  As you can imagine, Archie and Meathead were on opposite sides.
