St. X opens the season hosting Owensboro in what should be another good game as both teams are championship contenders in their classes. Last year St. X defeated Owensboro 51-38 in a shoot out.

St. X returns several starters on defense which to start the season will be the strength of the team. St. X breaks in a lot of new faces on offense, especially at the skill positions. Last year St. X won the 6A Championship defeating Male 31-21.

Owensboro returns several starters on both sides of the ball and look primed to make a run for the championship in 5A. Last season Owensboro made it to the semifinals of  5A losing to Frederick Douglass 35-7.

Who wins what looks to be a competitive game?

Hope I can make this one!  From O side, they. Have a ton back.  On offense they lose RB Barksdale (who had a big game vs. X), but return Carbon (who split RB 50/50 for the most part).  They lose 2 lineman, but the Center is Williams now (who started there 2 years ago and played DL last year).  All other skill is back - Rogers, Goodwin, Pendleton.  The key is bookend D1 tackles - Lindsay and Miller.  Miller was sitting out scrimmage, so I hope it’s just rest, they’ll need him.  He did a great job last year vs X.

On defense they replace 1 inside LB and 2 CB’s.  It looks like Carbon has slid down to play CB and will share time with Rogers (based upon the scrimmage I saw).  I can’t tell who is playing safety based upon the number.  Austin Gough’s brother is a newcomer at ILB and the D-line is pretty big and strong with HInes and a couple others.  Goodwin, Clark and Pendleton off the edge/or coverage give a ton of speed to the defense.

Basically 8/9 back on Offense and 8 back on Defense.  Senior dominated team this year for the devils.

O has got to stop the run and put them in 3rd and long positions.  This game comes down to defense and not making mistakes.  X tremendous defense.  I could see a much lower scoring game this year.

Glad ? season is back and what better way to bring it in than playing a defending 6A powerhouse/defending state champs St. X that have a top tier coach in Wallace this will be a great measuring stick for Owensboro to see where they are and need to be…. Without Wimsatt at QB I doubt this game will be the offensive shootout that It was last yr. The defense will more than likely have to carry the team in this game, but if QB Boone can get it to his play makers in space I do believe O can put a few points on the board. The fan in me says  O squeaks out with a field goal win but the realistic side of me says X defense will be to much.

Don't see as many points being scored this year by either like team like there was last year. The strength of the Tiger offense is upfront, but just a little of what I saw from their scrimmage against Douglass, they don't look like guys who have played together very much. For me, the X OL has to be able to be consistent to allow their skill players the opportunity grow and develop into varsity starters. If they're consistent upfront, then they should be able to control the game and win a tough game against a tough opponent. If they're inconsistent it will be a tough game that will come down to the wire. The Tiger defense will be really good and did a good job against FD last night. The thing that impressed me most was their ability to rotate players and not lose much in terms of productivity.

Best time of year as Football Fridays are getting ready to get rolling again!

Two great defensive teams, but St. X may take time to find an offensive identity after graduating it's playmakers. Owensboro has the upper hand there. Boone had basically a full season starting after Wimsatt's departure, so they've got an experienced trigger man with a strong cast of returning skill people and a great o-line.

O's more established offense vs. X's superior numbers/depth

I think that's each teams strength in this game and one factor or the other could decide the outcome.

If this were Week 10, I'd take the Tigers and maybe not have to think twice about it. But in Week 1, I'll take the team that's got starters returning at 16 or 17 of 22 positions, evenly dispersed on both sides of the ball. This might be Owensboro's year and it starts on Friday.

Last season X played without Micah Carter, Teddy Meiers, and Jaxon Panarello against O. With them back O will not have much success offensively. X is a different beast once again this year and I like them to win 28-14.

This may be the best game in the State this Friday night!

X- the defending 6A champs.

O - lost on the road in the 5A semifinals last year.

X - returns a very strong defense and has pieces to use on offense.

O - returns 16 starters and has Seniors all over the field.

X - home opener - always a Big Night off Poplar Level Road!

O - THIS is their chance to get on the state wide stage during the regular season and make some noise as their other opponents just can't do that for them.

It's going to be a great tic-tac-toe match on Friday!

I also think the kicking game will be critical to this outcome.  I would kick most kickoffs and punts out of bounds against O.  They have guys who can take it to the house every time.  St X almost always has kickers who can make longer field goals.  That could be big in a close game.

I hope to make this one on Friday!  Love High School Football!

Yeah, lost 4 starters due to injury in 1st quarter and Wimsatt took advantage of that made it a close game.

Owensboro's ability to find the endzone on defense and special teams borders on uncanny. It seemed like every week last season they had someone taking a kick back or a pick-six or scoop and score. With so many athletes on the field, they're always a threat to score a non offensive touchdown or two. That's a potential x-factor for the Red Devils.

Coaches know more than me but I would fake a lot - draws, running back screen, bootlegs, etc.  X is way to good defensively to line up and not use fakes.  I love the Jaxon kid - great OLB but didn’t get to play last year.  O has a very solid O line that seemed to do a good job last year.  That will be a good matchup Lindsay/Miller blocking Carter/Meiers.

Too much inexperience for X at the skill positions. It will be tough going up against an experienced O offense & defense.

O -17

X - 13
