The manual scrimmage O was missing Miller at RT, Carbon and Pendleton and they fought that to a near draw.  After Miller went down vs Freddie O went from looking better than FD initially to not great protection from that side.  Miller and the line did a solid job vs X even when Carter was in game.  Yes X presents the best front in the state though. Boone will take what is given and doesn’t have to do everything just get it to Carbon, Rogers, Goodwin, Pendleton in space and let them do work.  On defense, Early is a solid ILB and the weak side is Gough who comes from great pedigree. O defensive line is big and athletic.  They’ve got to eat up blockers and free the quickness of the linebackers to swarm.  Easier said than done.  Put X into passing situations and I love the devils secondary.  Carbon, Rogers and Robinson at corners, Clark is a great LB/nickel who has great wheels as well.  Need some turnovers from the defense.  I really think this is going to be a great defense this year.  Goodwin has to be one of the best OLB’s in the state.

This is what I come back to. Owensboro and Manual played pretty even for a little bit that I saw, now it's a scrimmage but Manual also has struggled against X, T, and Male over the years. So it will be how to Owensboro deal with a step up in competition; like last year will they have a guy that can right the ship if things start to get out of hand? They don't need the talent set of Wimsatt, but just someone that can stay focused and not allow a bad play to turn into multiple bad plays. The same can be true for X, especially on offense because that will be the biggest question mark. 

But those questions are what make the beginning of the year so exciting, which players are ready to step and take on those leadership roles within the team.

If we are going off past history, the Devils are going to have their work cut out for them on Friday.  I believe Coach Wallace has won his last 14 matchups against OHS.  Their record in high profile games over the past 5-6 years hasn't been great even though they did rise to the occasion against Douglass a few years back.  This would be a perfect game to hush the critics because a win over St. X to open the season would instantly change that perception.

The biggest questions I have offensively for OHS would be Kasey Boone and can their O-Line run-block St X?  Kenyatta Carbon is an absolute game breaker, and if the big guys up front can give him some lanes, lookout.  Carbon is the one guy that I feel can change this game for Owensboro.  I expect Coach Wallace will be more than prepared to key on him.  If X can slow down the run, I don't know that Boone can make enough plays to beat a team of this caliber even with a very good WR corps.

I am a big fan of this Owensboro defense.  They have a ton of playmakers on that side of the ball.  Guys like Hines, Goodwin and Clark can dominate their spots.  The Devils will be replacing 2 really good corners in Taylor and Moorman, but seem to have some solid depth stepping in.  In this matchup, the biggest worry I would have if was Owensboro, would be the middle LB core.  Can Gough and Early fill the gaps and slow down St X's run game?  If they allow, 5-6 yards per carry, its going to be tough.

In the end, I just think this is too high of a mountain for the Devils to climb.  I think the physicality up front will be enough for X to control the game and in the end, they'll put up enough points to win it.

Prediction: ST X 21 - OHS 7

This is how I feel about it as well. Would be nice if Boone could come out and prove us wrong. 

 

While I do think that it is not outside the realm of possibility that the Devils could win this one, they are going to have to actually do it to make me a believer.  That being said, if they can get past this week without any significant injuries, I think that they more than likely run the table the rest of the regular season.    

 

That’s laughable he’s got to be top 10 in state.
