Scrimmages are scrimmages, I get that.  But it's much better than 7 on 7 for assessing where you stand against other teams and Bullitt East handled Ballard pretty easily 35-14 and it wasn't that close.  7 of Ballards points was a db picking up a dropped pass to the flats that 2 yards in front of the qb that was somehow ruled a backwards pass.  Their Offense scored 7 points.  The game wasn't close. 

Would they beat Ballard 3 or 4 scores today?  Probably not, but I would like their chances on getting the win. 

Pre-Playoff Reassessment

With the regular season behind us, four teams have emerged as the top contenders to take home the mythical crown. But given what we've seen transpire over the last few weeks, the mythical title may have to take a back seat to the legitimate one. It should make for the best big school playoffs in quite some time.

 

Bryan Station (District 8 Champion)

Record: 7-3

BGP Ranking: #8

The Defenders suffered three early knockdowns and appeared on the verge of being TKO'd in this debate before making a comeback on the scorecards. They've run off seven straight wins, including throttling former contender Madison Central. Station shouldn't have much trouble advancing through the first two rounds before a likely third round encounter with Trinity, Ballard, or Simon Kenton.

 

Bullitt East (District 4 Champion)

Record: 9-1

BGP Ranking: #4

No one left in this chase has a better win than the Chargers' rousing triumph over Male. They actually took down one of the "Big 3". BE won't have to wait as long as Bryan Station for a postseason fight, as a second round tussle with Manual seems all but assured.

 

Henderson County (District 1 Champion)

Record: 8-2

BGP Ranking: #9

I'm not going to hold the losses to Boyle County and Owensboro against the Colonels. They both have all the pieces to make it to Kroger Field. Hendo ran over everyone else, averaging 50 ppg in their eight wins. They too, should bullrush their way into the RPI rounds, where they'll have to contend with the likes of St. X, Male, Manual, or Bullitt East in the west.

 

Simon Kenton (District 6 Champion)

Record: 7-3

BGP Ranking: #7

The Pioneers endured some injuries and losses to stout competition in the front half of the schedule. The three teams to best SK have a combined record of 29-1. They're now healthy and fresh off a defeat of previously undefeated Woodford County. The Pioneers have sewn up the highest seed in the east, but will have to clear Trinity in the second round in order to reap the benefit later on.

Henderson has the size, speed and athletes to be in any game.  I think they would play with Manual or Ballard.

I agree. Not sure they win, but they could compete. I would not pick them against St. X or Trinity.

The race for the "At-Large" title is heating up. We've got five teams left, with only one assured of a semifinal slot.

Bullitt East (11-1, vs. Central Hardin) - The Chargers are the leader of the pack at the moment. They've got wins over Male and Manual in the last month. No other team in contention has even one win that can rival those two.

Central Hardin (11-1, vs. Bullitt East) - The Bruins have been quietly gathering steam and have a chance to knock out our current front runner this week. The two score, head to head loss to Henderson County hurts their case right now.

Bryan Station (9-3, vs. Trinity) - They haven't been challenged in over two months. If Bullitt East falls this week and Station can take out 6A's great white whale, the Defenders probably move to the front of the line.

Henderson County (10-2, vs. Male) - A narrow loss to Owensboro is the only hiccup in a demolition tour that began with the win over Central Hardin, a victory that looks better and better all the time.

Madison Central (9-3, vs. Ballard) - Frankly, the Indians probably need to win the whole thing. Anything less leaves their claim open to scrutiny.

 

The full body of work will ultimately decide our State "At-Large" Champion. We're not necessarily placing this mythical crown on the head of the last team left standing, unless that team is standing at the 50 yard line of Kroger Field celebrating the real thing in a couple of weeks.

Bullitt East beat Male in district play, beat Manual in the playoffs and beat Ballard in a scrimmage by 21.  They may not win another game but they are honestly pretty good.

This is the ideal scenario for settling the debate. Couldn't have worked out any better if I were pulling the strings myself. One semifinal is the Jefferson County championship, the other determines the "At-Large" half of the equation.
