It isn't a rule of coaching to use a timeout. In fact, almost every game that comes down to a last second shot, the announcers will ask, "are they going to use a timeout or go with it". 

 I believe UK had practiced that last shot play.  We can criticize the play design and fault the execution, but the team knew what they were supposed to do on that last play and had practiced it many times.

 Let me ask you. I believe you have coached a decent amount. Do you have a play for a last second shot in case you have no timeouts left?

It's situational depending on the opponent, personnel, etc. You always have an idea...but sometimes you adapt. And MANY times players make you look a heckuva lot smarter than you are lol.

Yes! Vinson drives into the paint and has a shot he can take trailing by 1 point. Instead he kicks the ball out to the 5'9" well defended player for a corner 3 pointer.

Time and time again I see teams call a timeout only to watch a player shoot a contested NBA 3 pointer. Really? Did all these coaches go to a clinic to learn plays to shoot a last second 3 pointer in a tie game? That drives me crazy.

I have no problem not calling a timeout on the last play of regulation.

I have a major problem not calling a timeout when you're up 68-62, they switch defenses, and we look absolutely lost.

UK went up 6/8 late in 2nd half with Wheeler driving to basket and making plays.  Give St. Pete coach credit for switching to zone and totally screwing up UK's mojo at that point.  I would have never thought changing defenses would have effected a college team like it did the last 9 minutes of this game.  

UK shot 20 more free throws than St. Pete too? It just keeps getting worse.

It was actually poor defense to start with, having a guy guard Wheeler 22 feet from the basket.  He will slice you up if you do that.  But credit the coach for switching it up.  That totally changed the outcome, stopped our momentum, and was a huge key to victory.  And Cal never called a timeout the entire time.  That's my major beef with him from last night.

I really thought we needed one then too RP. Even looked to see how many TOs they had, which was plenty.

And then I was like, did they all forget to just put Brooks in the high post?

A major what if considering he didn't play a game all year. But with how much Grady struggled over the past couple weeks, my mind wonders what if CJ Frederick was healthy this year. I believe he's a better defender than Grady too.

Absolutely, you have one you practice daily which you get to the rim on every single time, be strong and get to the tin and crash the boards, then you also keep one in your pocket and it depends on who is having the best game offensively, just about always will include scteening and back door cuts.

Why did Wheeler not take the shot when he drove to the rim on UK's last play?

Why did he make the risky pass to TyTy in the corner? 

Why did TyTy shoot the long jumper instead of driving to the rim?
