All "A" State Tournament - FORMAT CHANGE

I don't know the logistics issues being face so I hate to speculate. I have to believe everything was done to try and keep the tournament going. However, I can't help but think that there could have been a way to go forward with the tournament. For example, play the entire 1st round as scheduled. Any team that was unable to make their game time gets their first round game pushed back to Friday.  If a school says they are not going to send their team, they forfeit and that is on them. From there it's just re working the schedule to make sure you get all the games in. I can't imagine there being any school in the state who could not make it to the tournament site by some time Thursday.

Really makes you wonder if they didn't finally figure out they were going to lose their behinds and just called it quits.

Good job working this out All A and school leaders.

They could have moved it back one more day and maybe played some of the games at Madison Central in order to have two games going on simultaneously. That was one way to get the games played.
But I think part of the reason for the cancellation was the forecast, 4-8 inches of snow for tonight and tomorrow. They most likely knew it was going to be pushed back even more days.
I know our girls would have played anywhere, though. They worked too hard to get to this point and there’s four seniors. They’ve already had to opt out of the prestigious WYMT Mountain Classic due to Covid. It’s just been one of those crazy years all teams.

Maybe naivety on my part but I’d do it this way:

Round 1 - next Saturday (Region 1 vs. 2, 3 vs. 4, etc.)

Round 2 - next Sunday (1/2 winner vs. 3/4, etc.)

Those games played at one of the schools. It isn’t EKU but at least the tournament gets played. This likely only causes cancellations of one game (if you were scheduled for Saturday).

Round 3 and 4 - the following Saturday (March 6). Six games (two girls semis, one girls final; same for boys).

Play it at EKU, another college, or a local high school. At least it would be played. And there would be a limited amount of regular season games that would have to be canceled as a result. But that’s just me thinking out loud.

I hear ya.  Brossart girls have 6 seniors and several of them are 4 year starters.  Robertson County has maybe the best boys team in school history.  Not sure if Coach Steidel would have been able to do anything, but he sure is missed in a situation like this.

You also have Richmond Model there on the EKU Campus.  Three gyms 15 minutes away in Berea.

Somehow, I don't think this came down to gym space.

Wow!

If that's true, that's the type of thing that will put the event into the ground.  That's really, really bad.

I heard the All A people are possibly meeting today to decide if there’s anyway they can still play the tournament. I heard the suggestion was 1st region plays 2nd region, 3rd plays 4th, 5th plays 6th, and so on. The team with the highest RPI would have home court advantage. Games would begin Feb 19. The second round would be the same way, with the home team being the team with the highest RPI. Semifinals would be at a designated site, of which I heard Transylvania was mentioned.

This is only what I was heard. It may be true or may not. And it is only a suggestion to be discussed and voted on, supposedly tomorrow. Anyone else heard about this possibility?

That sounds familiar...

I just heard that the All A committee is having a meeting today at 4:00pm  to decide if they can still work out a plan to have the All A.
I believe two different proposals have been suggested for discussion,. One is  sectionals with a designated location for a semifinals and the other is have the entire tournament at Owensboro.

So glad they're reconsidering this, and IMO the sectionals idea would be the most practical. If weather is an issue how does having 32 teams travel to Owensboro solve the problem?

Sure the snow will eventually melt, and we might luck out for awhile not to have another system of snow blanket us, but as for now it seems more logical just to have the sectionals idea play out, and the original bracket was just a blind draw anyhow so it really shouldn't be a big deal to have that change, and this way a semi's will include 4 teams from all around the state.

As far as the $$$ end of it goes, because of COVID having it a EKU probably wasn't going to net much gate, and neither will they in Owensboro. It's nice of Owensboro to offer, but they're not really a centralized location.

No matter what they decide I sure hope that they can pull off something.

Play it after region finals. If team makes Sweet 16, send runner up in region A tourney. Doesn’t need played at EKU if schedule conflict. A lot of high schools in Lexington area to use. Play boys A during girls Sweet 16 and girls during boys Sweet 16. Teams have earned the right the play, need to find a way!

What kind of a deal is that to send runner up to All A tourney if the winning team makes the Big Dance?  Bringing more teams into Lexington at the same time will just help Mr. Covid to spread.
