Toyota makes awesome vehicles and I "own" a Camry. I do agree with everyone that it is hard to know what is American. To answer your question it is a personal preference on top of everything else, I really like GMC trucks.

Why do you think gas is going up? Increased demand as COVID vaccine open the economy? I could see that but there is plenty of oil in the ground that will be put into market as prices increase. For that reason, there is always going to be more supply than demand which should control price. Beyond that, I see gas demand decreasing year over year as more electric vehicles hit the road.
February 1, 20215 yr Toyota trucks will run forever, their short comings to me are in fit and finish inside the truck. The interior doesn't seem to hold up as well as others, they just feel "cheaper" inside. GMC is a solid truck, good ones will run forever but they do throw in clunker from time to time. I had one that had close to 400k on it by the time I sold it. Replaced rear-end and motor both around 200K. F-150 has great resale and in my opinion make the overall best truck. Eco-boost is surprisingly strong motor, stronger than other companies V8's, and Ford Trucks have a great resale value.

The 4Runner's are nice on the outside, but leave a lot to be desired on the interior.

Yes, post Covid demand spike, along with a soon to be tightening oil supply. We’re already at $2.45 in Cincy with the lowest demand time of the year. I think the perfect storm is brewing for $3 again. Electric cars are still in the distance. The model 3 base Tesla is $37K. The Cybertruck as it relates to this thread starts at $40K. Those are upper middle class cars. 10-20 years from now, you will be right, I think we will have some headwinds until then though.

At $3 / gallon, don't the oil companies turn wells back on? There is a glut of supply. That will keep prices from getting too high.

There are 2 markets I think Toyota has missed out on. 1. 3/4 ton and/or diesel truck market. Tundra has been successful that I'm surprised they haven't gone further with it. 2. Jeep market. FJ Cruiser should have had a removable top and went directly after the Jeep market. It would've been 100 times more successful than the FJ Cruiser with its stupid half rear doors and huge blind spots.
February 5, 20215 yr I have never owned a pickup truck but love looking at them. Personally, I like the look of the Dodge Ram.
February 5, 20215 yr What will be the use? Is it just for transportation or will you use it for light work and/or hauling? I have a pickup because, well, I'm a country boy and pickups were always useful for hauling. The most use I got out of the bed of a pickup truck was hauling my dirt bike to the strip mines to go hill-climbing. But gravel, corn, and stuff to the dump made the old truck handy to have. Now I get a couple loads of mulch each spring, maybe some gravel for the drive, moving stuff for myself or friends, pulling a camper, loading it down with camping gear, hauling the stuff for my kids' dorm rooms, etc. Heck, when I was a kid my Dad would back up to a slight incline, and the pony would walk up and into the bed of the truck and we'd take him from the farm to our house so we could ride him. He'd just stand there looking content and lean into the curves like he was on a motorcycle. ? In addition, my sister and I, and all of our friends, would pile into the back of the pickup and go to town or the lake or whatever destination. Or we'd haul coal for my Grandma's coal furnace. A pickup is just a very useful tool. I sure missed it when I was without one for several years. If you're just going to use it for transportation, then buy a car... unless you like the height of a truck. I know I prefer getting in and out of my truck to my wife's Ford Fusion or my son's Honda Civic. It's just a lot less effort. And you can see the road ahead a lot better when you're sitting up a little, esp. in traffic. I've had really good service out of a Ford F-150. That thing ran like a top. I could also recommend my current 2008 Chevy Silverado. And I'm with @theguru, I like the looks of a GMC a little better than the Chevy and a whole lot more than a Nissan or Toyota.
February 6, 20215 yr I agree with most of the opinions in this thread. The only thing I would say is while Toyota builds a very good product they are not as bullet proof as their reputation leads them to be. Just off the top of my head you had the major frame rusting problems of the 90's and early 2000's. Their 3.0 V6 also had major head gasket issues in the 90's and early 2000's. Obviously that was a long time ago but if you owned one of those vehicles you probably don't buy into the Toyota hype. I will say Toyota holds their value very well. But really all trucks hold their value now days. IMO, buy whatever truck you like and take care of it and you will not be disappointed.

I have the 2014 model 4/4 quad cab. 102,000 miles, a lot of it pulling a horse trailer, and (knock on wood), I haven’t spent a dime on repairs. I liked all the American brands, but I bought this one because of the 8-speed transmission. It has the 5.7 liter hemi...lots of power, and I get low 20’s gas mileage on the highway.
