I asked this question weeks ago and I’ll ask it again today. Realistically, who do you hire ?

Could we get Coach K ( Who literally quit playing non conference because things weren’t going his way)for 10 million a year? Maybe we can get Tony Bennett for 5 million a year in addition to coach K as a defensive specialist. Hell, maybe Pop and Steve Kerr want to give up the NBA lifestyle for the simple life in Lexington. Let’s sign them too...

Great question. I really would love to hear who UK fans think we could get. That would have a better ten year run than coach Cal had. Would people rather it been spread out more? Instead of four in five year, would they rather they final fours have been like every other year during these ten years? Would that make it any better?

UK has had only one coach ever win multiple titles here. So the chances of anyone coming in and having a better ten year run, than Coach Cal is slim to none. Over these last ten years, he is first in tournament wins, and final fours. So he is having success where people care about most, and that is winning a lot of games in March.

I believe most would agree that Cal has lost some energy the last two or three years.

Its not a criticism.  I think that the 1AD system is very hard on head coaches.  They have to recruit like crazy each year.  Then they have to coach up these recruits with lots of intensity and focus during the season.  And they have to try to meld them into peaking at the end of the season.  To do this year-in and year-out has to wear on any coach working this approach.  And to some extent all college coaches do now.

I would not find it outside the realm of possibility that Cal makes a key decision on his own terms at the end of this season.

Im really not sure what else fans would want in a coach. Or who they think we would get that would consistently do better. It’s fair to be upset about this season so far though, I won’t argue that. This type of season definitely can’t happen again.

This goes to the heart of unrealistic expectations. Exactly like you say, who are they going to get that's going to be better?

It really sucks that last years tournament didn’t get to be played. Cal actually had an experienced team that people say they wanted him to have. They had good guard play, drew fouls, and could make free throws. They were going to be a dangerous team last year. Yet people want to add last years team as a team that failed to make a final four, even though it never got played. It has basically only been four teams that have failed to make the final four, since 2015. Two of those four teams were literally a shot a way from being in it. Then last year they were set up to make a run again.

I agree with a lot of this.  Was really curious how they would do last year.  Hagans, who I wasn't a big fan of, was going to make or break them.

He very well could.  He said before he every coached a game that 10 years is about all a coach can do at a school like Kentucky.

This is KY Basketball a Blue Blood program and depending on who you ask the Greatest of all time. They ( Barnhart ) can go after anyone. I’d contact Brad Stevens first, make him say no.  I’m sure 9 million plus a year would get a lot of the Top coaches attention. Stevens salary for the Celtics is 3 million a season. KY could triple that.

You don’t have to recruit in the NBA...

I don't understand 2 things in this thread.

1.  Why is there always a "put Coach K down" tone when talking about Coach Cal?  Its is kind of like the little kid who says "well so and so isn't doing it right either, rather than focusing on the point which is Coach Cal.

2.   Why do some UK fans continue to think they were poised to win a national title last year.  Now I have heard Coach Cal talk about how they were ready to win the whole thing but that is just deflection talk as I don't see how any team in the country can claim they were going to win a national championship, if it were not for Covid.  Yet I hear ( and not just on BGP) UK fans declaring they were indeed going to take the title.   They were 3 - 3 vs ranked teams with 2 of their wins coming in OT.  Not saying they were not a final 4 contender but I really do hear and read too much about how they were "poised to win it all."

I think some of the Coach K stuff is just to provide an illustration. Most acknowledge him as one of the all time greats if not THE greatest coach ever. And he has adjusted his recruiting style to be very, very similar to Cal. So when some are ready to run Cal out of town, say he’s lost the touch, etc., it’s illustrative to point out that the GOAT is experiencing almost exactly the same parallel. No final fours in five years, two elite eights, three sweet sixteens, occasionally suffering major speed bumps with OAD. The main difference in the two program’s results is that Duke has won a title more recently.

Brad Stevens isn’t leaving Boston. Offer all you want, that ain’t happening.

So let’s take a look at realistic coaches who have won championships over the last 10 seasons.

Coah K - 2 championships. He’s not coming to UK.

Jay Wright - 2 championships. I’m almost 100 percent sure he’s not leaving Villanova for anyone but the 76ers:l. He’s a Philly guy...He’s been upset by lower seeds a ton of times in the tournament.

Mark Few at Gonzaga? Is this the guy you want ? He’s flopped my entire life. He’s the Notre Dame of college basketball.

So your plan is to offer Brad Stevens (who isn’t leaving the NBA) an insane amount of money and hope he accepts?
