In previous years with Strickler, Wallace, Drobocky, etc. a simple slant over the middle is a gauranteed first down.  Not very many kids are gonna get Dingle down by themselves, so I’m not sure why they haven’t implemented quick passes to him as much as previous TE’s.

Couldn’t agree more! Our offense is playing defenses that aren’t allowing many points a game. The level of competition again isn’t 2A and 3A teams.  I don’t know about you.. but I don’t care if we score on the ground or in the air.. as long as we score. Believe it or not, until you talk to the players, there’s a lot that we as fans don’t see and tend to just blame on the Offensive Coordinator or the QB. A few players admitted to running wrong routes last Friday .. that takes away that pass that forces Cooper to scramble and “tuck” the ball quicker and run. Fortunately, his speed and agility has tremendously helped the Purples in the Playoffs. He has kept so many drives going with his legs when we were 3rd and 12 or more that I can’t even count. 
I believe if you go back and watch film, Bunton dropped 3 passes that he had a wide open lane to run. Fortunately, the boys don’t nit pick like we do. They go out and just get it done. 
Im with you as well, Dingle has started to play a different role postseason. He’s became a blocking machine. Honestly, during season, he dropped a lot of open-field passes. Plus, they know there’s other weapons they can use. Forcing him the ball for the fans sake is definitely not going to win us the State Title. It seems at this point, these boys are doing what they have to do against some amazing competition. Every game might look different, and that’s ok. The ones were criticizing the most are the ones that have pulled us on this journey with them. I gotta thank them for this exciting ride. 
But hey, we wouldn’t have anything to write about if they were perfect! Lol 

 

I think they are going to ride their heavy hitting horses that got them here.. and that’s ok. Everyone on Kroger field may not touch the ball on Saturday.. and that’s ok too. As long as we’re up at the end.. that’s what matters. GO PURPLES! 

I looked back at the 2018 last meeting between BG and Owensboro, these players played in 2018 and will be playing again on Saturday:

Gough - had 13 tackles, 4 TFL and 2 sacks, carried the ball 4 times for 28

Avery had 8 tackles (now the RB)

Flaherty caught 3 passes and had a tackle

Tinsley, Millay, McHenry, Stevenson

 

On the BG side:

Dingle caught 4 passes for 46 yards and a TD and 1 tackle

Jones had 5 tackles and 1 TFL

Cooper had 2 tackles

Had Coach Fallin on who spoke about the significant win over Frederick Douglas.  He will be speaking about the Purples and Owensboro's preparation on the show later this week!  He had an interesting comment that he watches the other teams kicker every week so he knows about what FG range his opponent has.  I thought that was really insightful!

Also Coach Spader was on as well speaking about BG getting a win over CovCath.  He then spoke about facing the Red Devils and mentioned that he initially faced them as a player back in his Hoptown days and say Owensboro was always a tough team.  They asked about BGs defense and he credited his players buying into the system and continuing to work hard.  Its an old cliché but it works is why coaches keep bringing it up!

You should listen in each night this week for other cool features for this game!  I really enjoyed it!

Only half way thru the week but its easy to see that Owensboro just isn't getting the respect they deserve.  Sure, Bowling Green may end up winning the game, but I don't think people across the state realize just how talented this Owensboro group is.  Turn on the tape of that first half against Frederick Douglass and you will see a really talented group executing a fantastic game plan.

Unfortunately the first half is pretty much not on NFHS network. I watched it today and after the first owensboro td it skips to like 1 minute before halftime. I was disappointed cause I wanted to see it.

But what I saw in the second half I am even more confident BG will win.  If BG just plays well and don't turn the ball I don't see Owensboro being a threat. Now if BG has a bad game could be a different story.

I wasn't impressed with Owensboro what I saw anyway.  Wish most of the first half made on the on-demand broadcast. 

2 Days Before the Big Game!!!

Let's get more focused here!  My Top 5 Keys to the Game:

1.  "Contain Owensboro QB Gavin Wimsatt".  I usually say get pressure on the other teams QB and that is good from a BG perspective, but one of Wimsatt's most under-rated attributes is that he runs quite well.  BG needs to apply pressure with their front 3/4 while trying to limit easy runs for the O QB.  The BG OLine must also do a good job of protecting QB Cooper.  Owensboro DL Savon Hines is a very talented guy on that DLine.

Conversely for Owensboro, "Protect Your Quarterback"!  I don't think Frederick Douglass got much pressure on Wimsatt at all.  This will be key against a very good BG front 3/4.  Also put pressure on BG QB Conner Cooper and NOT let him run wild!!!!

2.  Win the Kicking Game!  This is for both teams.  How many State Championships has you seen turned by a missed extra point or a Kick 6.  Either would be HUGE in this game!  Punting is also important with 2 very good defensive teams.  SO Andrew Lanz has come on to be a solid weapon for Owensboro.  SR Eli Burwash is the best punter BG has had in maybe 20 years.

3.  Steady the Offense!  For BG - Give QB Conner Cooper some easy passes early to get into the game and then try more daring plays.  Get RB Javy Bunton involved early too.  He's been the Purples workhorse all year that shouldn't change here.  Same thing for QB Gavin Wimsatt; it will be important to start off strong and establish a shorter passing game will allow for some deeper looks up top later.

4.  Limit the Home Run Balls!  For Both teams, Owensboro loves to throw deep to Tinsley and BG is at their best IMO when they can stretch the defense.  Every score counts and you don't want to give up an easy one.  Will BG target SR TE Jordan Dingle?  We will see.

5.  Turnovers!  They are critical in every game you play but none moreso than a State Championship game.  You can do everything above well and lose here and still lose the game.

BG has turned their opponent over 20 times in the last 3 playoff games (an UNREAL number).  Owensboro simply can't afford to let this happen.  Same with BG.  Bowling Green easily could have been up 28-0 at the half at CovCath were it not for turnovers.  No faults, no blames, just facts.  The team that wins the turnover battle is very likely to win the game;  it's that simple.

 

Prediction Time:  I love this Rivalry and think this is such a unique opportunity for both teams.  In the end, I have to go with the team I feel has the best defense and I think that team is Bowling Green.  I think Owensboro will score and if they win the turnover battle and get support in the kicking game, they can win this game also.  But ultimately, I think BG is the better team.  Not by much (because most on this board don't realize how good Owensboro really is), but a little and I place some value to the fact that Owensboro has left Daviess County twice all season while BG has traveled to Louisville 3 times and their schedule is significantly better.  You don't win games based on who you played, but you prepare based on who you played and here Bowling Green has an advantage.

Spot on! We gotta take care of business from the first whistle to the last. Owensboro came out and throttled Douglas in the first part of the game going up 21-0, we can't let that happen. That comes with tackling on special teams and putting Gavin and the Devils on a longer field (inside their 35). I love the bail technique used by our DB's, this allows us to bait quarterbacks into picks (Neon Deion!). I really love the schedule the coaching staff put together, along with a decent district has made this Purples squad as battle tested as any team before them. I'm looking for Dingle to make a huge debut at Kroger field! Go Purples!!
