I thought it was more or less that helicopters in general don't usually have a black box?

I for one would think a terrain awareness system would be standard in a helicopter,especially his, it looked like a pretty nice one.

They are not mandatory but they are recommended. Kobe definitely had the money to be on helicopter that had every safety feature known. The TAWS is only required on Air Ambulances and not regular helicopters just like the black boxes.

One would think that, but It didn't have a terrain awareness and warning system or TAWS.

We’re probably going to see that now although, I don’t believe it would have saved the helicopter. Today, they said the helicopter wasn’t certified for IFR. Just horrible, I’ve been in many helicopters and couldn’t imagine those last 5 mins.
