I hope the woman on MSNBC gets fired for her comments about Kobe and the "Lakers."

 

I do as well and I imagine she likely already is.

Absolute tragedy, I went back and researched the flight pattern and audio. One man’s opinion, but my speculation is the pilot was flying VSR (visual rules) and turned right into a IMC (Instrument meteorological condition) situation. After he was given clearance to leave his holding pattern, my guess is the weather deteriorated. Roughly 75% of VFR to IMC situations are fatal, vs. roughly 17% of other types of aviation events.

Its saddening and likely could have been avoided from the sounds of it.

She claimed that somehow she got the Knicks and the Lakers mixed up in her head when she was reporting, and it didn’t come out sounding right, and that she wasn’t a racist, nor would she ever dare say anything like that.

 

While it was seriously bad timing for her to have a brain fart, I have to believe that the chances of her accidentally messing up as she said is much higher than going for career suicide, and saying what everyone thought that it sounded like.

He pulled up 800 feet full thrust at the last second. The fog was so dense it had to have been hiding the ridge.

Can’t help but notice the fog in those hills. As someone with aviation interest, fog is the worst for helicopters. Too early, to tell what happened though.

 

Sounds like a lot of other helicopters were grounded yesterday because of the weather conditions.

It's weird when celebrity deaths can hit you as hard as sometimes they do. Cried on my way into work this morning.

 

My 86 year old grandpa and 83 year old father both called me last night to talk about Kobe. I'm 34. Dude was legendary and I'm not sure I appreciated him enough until now. This one just feels really though, especially the more I think about his daughter too.

As an educator, today I'm taking a step back from the normal curriculum and pacing guide to focus on yesterday's heartbreaking events. Students are going to watch Dear Basketball, and they're going to break that short film down and then write letters to someone/something that means the most in their life to them.

 

I've been blessed getting to grow up and watch Kobe play his entire career. Even though he's a celebrity, the fire he played with and now the family man he is resonated inside of me. This whole situation is heartbreaking.

My friend lives in Santa Monica. From what she's heard, the baseball coach, wife, and daughter on the plane, also had another young daughter/sister which was not with them. If true, talk about being scarred for life.

Since the flight was following the 101 using VFR to get to Newbury Park these hills are what had to be navigated. According to the wiki the grade peaks at 841 feet but the ridges around it are obviously much higher. The second photo on the right shows the 101 on the path they were on.

Not so weird. I don't watch the NBA. Never saw a single game Kobe played in. When I was describing the clip I posted here to Mrs. S, I got all choked up and had a hard time getting through it. Can't tell you why.
