In 1965 and 1966 Hopkinsville took the 2A title handily. They were coached by Fleming Thornton. Does anyone have info on him? His reign was short, but it was bright.

I think the coaching job Mike Yeagle did stands alone. He took a school that was often smaller than his opponents and went to 7 straight finals, winning 6 and missing the 7th on a missed 2 point conversion.

:ylsuper:

I didn't know he coached H.S. in KY. What schools was he at?

I kept wondering if he coached at MMI at some point? I was kind of throwing it out there to see if anyone knew.

I am surprised that Bob Redmon does not have some support on this thread. He went to the state championship game with two different schools, and had powerful teams at three different schools. He has battled X tooth and nail in district while at Male, with a smaller enrollment. Everyone criticizes his unorthodox defensive schemes, but after this season I believe that he is number four on the all-time win list in the Commonwealth. He must do something right

Isn't he the loosingest coach all time also? :D

yep.... he's disqualified..Just kidding.....you stick around long enough and you break records is all I am going to say. .I am not that old so I dont know a ton of history but Mike Yeagle and what he did at Beechwood in the 90's has to be considered when thinking about Top 5 alltime.

Dudley Hilton has to be up there and Sam Harp as well.

I would say one great coach that no one has mentioned, who has 3 state championships, and had a 42 game winning streak, is Mike Holcomb from Breathitt County. What he has done there is outstanding. He is not only a great coach but a great human being.

It's tough to say..but Dennis Lampley and Bob Beatty both would be in the discussion.

Good pick. Is he still there? Jf so, what happened? They were dominant, then quickly not dominant.

Great list and some great additions mentioned also.

Ed Miracle definitely belongs on the list, what an amazing run.

Garnis Martin of Bardstown hasn't been mentioned.

Ivan Mcglone and Philip Haywood deserve the ink also.

Overall, I think my vote would go to Yeagle. Nobody has matched that success in such a short period of time, although Harp has been close and what Smith did at Boyle is awesome.

Agreed, and you can't have those two in there without Hillard Howard also.

I'm sure that Bob is a good speaker before the game, but Yeagle was unbelieveable. That man would make a grown man cry with his speeches. We would want to run through a brick wall after hearing his speeches.

George Fallis

That is hilarious.

Who is the greatest Kentucky high school football coach of all time? Criteria to be considered may include total games won, total championship games coached in, and resources the coach had to work with. Resources may include the school's football tradition prior to the coach's arrival, the school's facilities, the school's enrollment, and any other relevant factors that may better assist in determining the greatest Kentucky high school football coach of all time. One thing to bear in mind is that however the determination is made it is a subjective determination. To start the discussion, I list several coaches below. This list is not exclusive, nor is it final. In fact, the greatest coach may not even me on this list. The list is merely to facilitate discussion on this topic.

Sam Harp-Beginning in 1989 and continuing through this season his teams have appeared in seven state championships games and won 70% of those matches.

Try 10 state championship appearances since 1989, winning 7.
