The Cal we proposed to had Worldwide Wes funneling players to us. He's not doing that anymore. Fans don't want to acknowledge that, but it's the truth.

 

Additionally, more programs have adopted the recruiting strategy Cal had early on. But that doesn't carry nearly the weight of WWW's absence.

 

So there's the truth. My question remains, though. What current program(s) do you wish we were more like?

Players being lax on the defensive end, repeatedly failing to box out, key missed free throws, & costly turnovers.

I don’t usually watch UK basketball but watched from beginning to end. This sums it up, especially the boxing out. A really bad second half.

I got chastised by some on here Saturday when I listed some things I was somewhat concerned about with this team. They were: Turnovers, allowing offensive rebounds, and FT %. Well tonight in a loss that should not have happened the Cats allowed a whopping 20 offensive rebounds to South Carolina and for the third straight game shot less than 70% from the line and finally had 15 turnovers while only causing 9 from the Gamecocks.

Well glad to see some of the usual suspects pop back up and give a UK thread some action when they lose lol.

 

With that said very bad lost tonight. When you let a team hang around that your better than, and then that teams gains the momentum bad things happen.

 

They showed tonight they still have awhile to go. Which is normal because his teams usually don’t get to their best until in February sometime.

 

People already listed all the negatives tonight. Some things that I do like that gives me hope. Is I think we seen now we may have two guys on the team who can get buckets at the end of games if need and that is Maxey and Quickley. So that definitely is a big thing come tournament time. Right now this team has four guys who have shown flashes of being very good players in Hagans, Quickley, Richards, and Maxey. The only problem has been the consistency. They need those four to be consistent with the flashes they have shown. Plus UK needs a fifth guy still to really step up, which Sestina has some.

 

So for me this team has shown flashes. Which is why I do have hope and believe once again Cal will have this team playing as good as anyone come tournament time once again and have a legit shot at it. With how college basketball this year, every team is flawed. So it really is wide open for any team. Just have to get hot at the right time.

This Kentucky team will lose a lot more if Whitney,Brooks,Juzang don't get going.

And you’re right n all those, this team is really not very talented and doesn’t make up for their deficiencies with tough, hard nosed play, I will be totally shocked if they get past the first weekend of the tourney.

Tonight was a perfect example of why Calipari has said that Brooks, Whitney, and Juzang are important for what the team can be in March. Those guys need minutes and need to develop. Because if Kentucky gets into foul trouble, like tonight, there can't be a huge drop off when those guys come in.

Tonight was frustrating because there didn't seem to be a sense of urgency and guys let the environment, refs included, take them out of their element.

 

It's little things that are tripping them up right now that can be easily fixed, in turn, that's what makes it so frustrating when they're not.

My main hope from last night's game is that Hagans learns from it. It looks like he took ownership on social media. He does a lot of great things out there. Does a good job of finding his guys good opportunities and open looks. Plays great defense. But sometimes he forces the issue too much and has 2-3 just really poor turnovers a game. If he can cut those out, he'd be a much better PG. I have faith.

I totally agree with this point, but honestly they just need 2 of the 3. I will say this, though. I saw something from Whitney last night in his limited minutes that I haven't seen much this year. Dude was driving hard to the lane, got the and 1, played with some emotion, snagged a few boards and at times looked locked in defensively. He does not need to score 15 a game. If he can come in and be a good defender, rebound, and be an energy guy I think that will bode well for this team. I kind of feel bad for him and Brooks. Brooks was working hard on the glass last night, but he has to provide an offensive spark. You can tell they just want to see the ball go in the basket. Brooks, as of late, could not hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Man, I was just about to post about Hagans. This team, will ultimately go wherever the 3 guards will take them, specifically Hagans. He has the ball in his hands so much that he has to be solid. If he is locking people down, taking care of the ball, and distributing then the Cats will be ok. He is so frustrating to watch, though, sometimes. Seems like he is still kind of battling the old motto of "let the game come to him".

 

One thing that I still think plays into UK's favor when it comes to the NCAA Tournament is that the tournament is driven by really strong guard play. If Richards continues to do what he is doing and you get more experience in tough games and environments out of your "Big 3" guards, this team could easily make a run.
