A valid question. The common sense speculative answer is that these young men and their families chose Covington Catholic because it offered the best combination of academics and athletics for their individual situation. If you want to put academics completely aside, then I’d assume it was based on factors such as: playing time potential , level of competition and collegiate exposure.

 

There’s also the possibility that some of these kids are at CCH because of positive word of mouth. CJ Fredrick probably would not have come to CCH, had his Uncle not been on the coaching staff. But, he came to CCH and thrived, parlaying his great high school career into a scholarship at Iowa. There is the possibility that families like the Fredrick’s share their positive experience with other families in their community. This likely also is a factor in some of these decisions.

 

I also believe that generally speaking, Cov Cath is cheaper than the traditional GCL powers in Cincinnati.

I am no Cov Cath fan but to me it could be an economic decision. Cov Cath costs around $9-10K and a GCL school costs around $13-14K. As long as the KHSAA continues to allow out of state kids to play athletics wouldn't you as a parent want to send your child to the best school that would allow them to compete and still get a great education. Plus you get to save $4k a year.

To the true Cov Cath fan seeing the school win with top talent is a great thing, however to the select families that have had kids grow up dreaming of wearing the blue and white, it is disappointment.

 

There's always football, baseball, soccer, etc. But yeah basketball has been the BIG BIG thing at CCH ever since the 2014 state title. But making the varsity BBall team has always been a dream for any high school kid. This time it's just even harder.

My cousin traveled to go to CovCath, and he became the only 4 time regional champion in tennis and got a scholarship to a top 10 college program. It was the best opportunity for him.

It really wasn’t that difficult to answer.

I wasn’t talking about the locker room at all. I was speaking on how coincidental it is that CCH folks are complaining now about non-locals on the team when I see the most diverse CCH team that I have seen.

 

That’s all.

 

But to be fair the 7 ft kid is also non local. There seems to have been an unusual amount of new faces showing up this year in comparison to previous years, which is why some are supposedly complaining. I personally have no qualms with anything though.

Here is a thread from earlier this year on the topic. Frankly, if basketball is your thing and you have a choice in NKY, CovCath is the clear number one.

I haven't heard any more complaining than you normally hear at the high school level. Some people are surprised, based on summer league games, that the team isn't ready for NBA competition yet. But that seems to happen every year.

Joe Fredrick is the juice behind the program. Always was and will continue to be. Everyone in ninth region AND at CCH knows it!

I'm sure the reason is no different than why kids in the Walton-Verona or Dixie districts would choose to go to Beechwood.

I wish the 7 footer was a little thicker/stronger. I saw him at LexCath and that height alone is a problem. Give him some strength and he becomes a serious problem.

 

I have no qualms about anything either. If I lived in NKY or the surrounding area and my kid played basketball he would be at CCH. Period.
