No matter what happens someone will be upset. Have coached in public and private settings and the experience is very different. The same people who complain will still show up, put up, and don their CCH gear. Old guys remember some of those Mote Hils teams, Reynolds Flynn's great Holmes teams, NCC, etc. Now because of AAU and social media EVERYTHING has changed. One option is to no longer schedule them unless you must for seeding, conference, etc. The other is to lace them up and give it your best shot.... because none of this will phase the KHSAA. Check CCH attendance at the Sweet Sixteen.

It’s awful coincidental that people are complaining loudly now about the talent at CCH when they have their most diverse team that I have ever seen at CCH. I didn’t hear anyone complaining when non-locals were carrying teams to Sweet 16 titles. Two of the best players in the Ruthsatz reign aren’t “locals”.

 

First of all, this is not the most diverse team Cov Cath has ever had, although, yes, it is the most diverse that the school has seen in a long long while. The re-districting that was done by the diocese took the more diverse parishes from the Cov Cath school district and switched them to Holy Cross in Covington.

 

Regardless, the "local kids" discussion is one that has pre-dated this season by 3 or 4 years, at least. So for those who have heard this discussion previous to reading the first post in this thread, the fact that this year's team has some racial diversity for the first time in a long while has literally zero bearing. The first time I heard this topic being discussed in a Cov Cath crowd was in 2016 at the Hall Of Fame banquet. There was zero racial diversity on the basketball team at that point.

 

Another thing that most people don't understand unless they've been in the diocesan schools here for a long while is the concept of "feeder parishes", which was done away with 15 or more years ago by Bishop Foys. Since literally the 1930s, the system in place established that had kids from certain parishes set into districts that would "feed" them into particular high schools. You could pay extra money to attend a different school in the diocese as an "out of district" student, but for well over 60 years, the absolute vast majority of students were from within the feeder parishes.

 

Now days, the feeder parishes aren't a "thing"...but there is still a decades-old tradition of fathers and grandfathers who are used to the concept of players coming through feeder schools and essentially just competing with other kids from feeder schools for positions on the teams at Cov Cath rather than kids from the Greater Cincinnati region as a whole.

 

Long story short, there are a lot of graduates of Cov Cath who sacrifice to pay $5000+ a year for their kids to go to the diocesan grade schools, and those graduates grew up with a different system that more or less meant that their kids, once they reached high school, would be competing with a smaller pool of talent for spots on the team. There is still some sentiment, even with the success that Coach Ruthsatz has brought to the school, that it would be nice to still have that smaller pool of kids/talent to compete with when their kids get to Cov Cath. In this day and age with Coach Ruthsatz and Coach Fredrick doing what they do, that just isn't an option any longer....and that is what it is.

First, I just wanted to make sure to clarify here, in case I didn't explain well earlier (I'm honestly not sure whether or not I did) the whole diocese did away with feeder parishes for all high schools - it was not just Cov Cath having their feeder parishes done away with, it was every diocesan high school as well. The thinking behind that had nothing to do with athletics. To paraphrase the explanation that was given in the diocesan newspaper at the time that they did away with the feeder system, "if any diocesan child wants to go to any diocesan high school, we certainly aren't about to charge their family extra money for them to go to a diocesan high school just because it's not the one they're located nearest to, geographically."

 

So to answer your questions, yes, Cov Cath has been more successful athletically since the diocese did away with the concept of feeder parishes. But no, that was not by design. That was the result of a change that was designed to serve another purpose.

I think the question asked by @PurplePride92 is valid. I am not saying it is true but it is valid to ask it. I also think it is very naive to think that it is a non issue for everyone.
