I have not heard this issue mentioned but believe it is worthy of discussion and may be the elephant in the room for Covcath. Certainly the Colonels have decided to change their direction from statewide to nationwide. I say this with all credit to coach Ruthsatz and his staff..mostly the players for the past 6 years or so. As a Covcath graduate the 2 state championships were Sweet with a capital S! They won with local kids (with the exception of the coach's kids, who were awesome!!) This year is very different. The new players seem to embody a philosophy well beyond our region or state and reflect Coach's desire to follow in his St. Anthony roots of a National Power. (New Jersey. Think Coach Hurley, Bobby Hurley, HBO special, and Michael Kidd Gilchrist)

 

There are only so many minutes in a basketball game which means the local kids are getting passed over. These are kids (and parents) that put in 10 or 12 years of work dreaming, believing of playing for the Colonels. I do credit the local kids (Diskin, Green, Moser) for surviving but they are all really special players and is their era over after this year? Will we ever have more than 1 or 2 kids from our local grade schools play for the Colonels? Why, given the recent success with the local kids? Should the kids who are local good players find a new place to play? Wondering what our local basketball community's take is on this.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading it..

Seems like a topic to stay away from. But I'll try and touch on the not so grey areas before it gets shut down.

 

In my opinion Cov Cath is the favorite to win the championship this year. No disrespect to the BGP rankings, I just feel like the Colonels have the best toolset to win in a grind it out, multiple day tournament.

 

In the sense of parents being upset, other teams, etc due to transfers. They should just embrace it, it's likely good for the school, community, the other teams in the region will strive to get better, etc.

 

On top of that, if Covington Catholic basketball gets so big that top players in the nation want to come play for them, then I'd imagine they develop a second team as a prep school. Again, nothing wrong with that, in fact it would be a good thing.

I too have heard there are some at CovCath that have had their fill of Coach Joe and kids coming not only from out of district, but also out of state. Many are very upset that kids that have put the time in at the feeder schools are getting little to no playing time if they are even on the team.

In the last few years we have already seen several very good players leave CCH to play for other local schools.

I remember five years ago when I coached against CovCaths freshmen group that they basically ran out 3 or 4 groups of 5 at us that could’ve been the starting lineup for any freshmen team in Northern Kentucky.

 

Covington Catholic has been a place where it is difficult to play for a long time and it has become only more challenging under Coach Ruthsatz as they compete for state titles on a basis never seen in this region.

 

Parents will always be upset. Everywhere and all the time. But everyone needs to remember that each of those kids is a kid worthy of support and praise, not just some of them. If sports were truly to be made all about the kids and absolutely nothing to do with adults, that would be a huge step in the right direction.

To the true Cov Cath fan seeing the school win with top talent is a great thing, however to the select families that have had kids grow up dreaming of wearing the blue and white, it is disappointment.

 

I can remember over 10 years ago siting in the stand on Saturday mornings for the eight grade league watching dads counting spots on the roster for the coming high school years.

 

In some cases they must decide to still attend the school they dreamed of or go elsewhere and play. This is not a new situation, as on a smaller scale this has gone on for years.

 

The Intramural League at Cov Cath has more talent than many smaller schools.

It’s awful coincidental that people are complaining loudly now about the talent at CCH when they have their most diverse team that I have ever seen at CCH. I didn’t hear anyone complaining when non-locals were carrying teams to Sweet 16 titles. Two of the best players in the Ruthsatz reign aren’t “locals”.

I’ll also add that Joe Frederick has been a class act to my family and I every time I have been fortunate enough to shake hands with the man. He will always have my respect and admiration. If every school had their own Joe Frederick working hard for the betterment of the school then their school would be a better place.

First of all, no they weren’t. And you can’t just exclude the coaches kids. Without non-local kids, CCH has exactly zero titles.
