Asterisk for Mercer?

Featured Replies

I don't remember Ashland's 1990 State Champion team having to throw the ball very often. If you have the horses like Ashland did that year you can line up in the wishbone, and just run over top everybody.

There should be no astericks beside there accomplishments...Unless theres one by all the St X and Trinity championships, there shouldn't be one here....No difference

X & T didn't combine football teams without combining the schools!

Their athletic and academic excellence plus their Catholic teaching brings in their students.

Why would you ever start a site like this? Same question...

?????????

Wow, a drive-by negative Trinity post on a post about the 2A final. No offense IAmAFan, but if you take T and X out of the mix your team gets beat by Male or Ballard or Manual or Henry Clay and so on.

I attended the Mercer/Russell game. Once again lack of balance was the culprit. If Russell had a better passing attack they would be celebrating their back to back titles. Learn to throw the ball. Embrace it. Love it. Its not evil. I promise.

That post had 0 to do with the T game. I didn't attend the Ryle/Trinity game because like I've said a hundred times, I'm not really a Ryle fan. 2 combined schools in 2 building with 1 football team. They have enrollment much bigger than 2A yet they remained 2A after they combined. Someone stacked that deck.......

Yes, there is. 4A is an open-ended class, with no enrollment limit.

The bottom line is that Mercer won a title with an enrollment which was higher than anyone else in their class. It isn't the first time and it won't be the last. Move on. They are the 2A state champs!
It isn't just that Mercer had an enrollment bigger than anyone in the class ... their enrollment is well above the class limit.
I was refering to Russell. Of course if you run the ball effectively and get the lead it usually works out. But what if Russell could pass and went ahead with a pass and a catch with a couple of minutes to go? Mercer likely would have suffered the same fate that Russell did. I don't get why people are so reluctant to throw the ball a little more.

Write this down...................................I agree with you. I hate running the ball. What's easier catch and pass, or running through and around everyone? Catch and pass of course. I wouldn't coach at the high school level unless we were a pass oriented offense.

No one is taking away the fact that they won the state title ... they won the game, and the trophy is going to Mercer County. Congratulations to them.

But the question is a valid one.

IMO, the Question is valid. Not to take anything away from the Mercer kid's.....but the KHSAA should not have let Mercer compete at the 2A level with such dwarfing enrollment numbers. It's unfortunate.

So ... can we now safely say that Mercer County wouldn't have won the state title without the consolidation?

Does anyone ever give credit where credit is due? This is the crazy that it would even come up. I believe the only reason people start threads like this is jealousy! Get a life.:madman: :madman:

I think they are both landlocked teams but the field conditions today aren't ideal for passing.

You think they were great last night?

Nothing to do with jealousy ... this was an issue discussed long before the season started.

CONGRATS MERCER COUNTY !! I was pulling for Russell, but you got the job done! The naysayers will forget about you as soon as they find something else to complain about! You are 2A Champs ! Enjoy!

Not a whole lot. The 1990 Ashland team would have won playing the same style in 2006.

 True but I didn't see Petrino behind center for Russell or Mercer.

So ... can we now safely say that Mercer County wouldn't have won the state title without the consolidation?

Strong evidence suggest so
