So ... can we now safely say that Mercer County wouldn't have won the state title without the consolidation?

 

Just how do you know that? You don't! Would anybody have predicted Bourbon County winning the title in '97? There is no sure thing. Get over it. Russell had their opportunities to win this game. It's a great story and made consolidation of those to programs much easier. Jaggers had a tougher task than most could imagine getting these guys to play together.

First of all....thanks to all who refuse to take away what a group of hard working KIDS accomplished. This thread is lacking in class, but expected.

First congrats to Mercer Co. They were dealt an advantage but they couldnt help that. Would they have won 3a? They more than likely would not have but you know what they were playing in 2a and was undefeated and won it. I think to prove that they could have been just as competitive in 3a they needed to beat Russell worse. On top of that Russell had the turnovers or it could have been a different game. And Im not taking anything away from Mercer because in 2a they were as good as anyone.

I was refering to Russell. Of course if you run the ball effectively and get the lead it usually works out. But what if Russell could pass and went ahead with a pass and a catch with a couple of minutes to go? Mercer likely would have suffered the same fate that Russell did. I don't get why people are so reluctant to throw the ball a little more.

 

We only had 50 mile an hour gusts of wind. Maybe that had a factor.

Yeah I felt bad for Tyler, it had to be tough throwing passes in that kind of wind. The wind was blowing so hard that sometimes the refs had to hold the ball for the center so it didnt blow away.

No, this is not true. Basketball will be merged. It is also worth noting that the students from the two schools are merged for classes as well. Although students are still based in their original district this year (the merger hit kind of late in the game to plan otherwise for this year), we actually bus students back and forth between the two campuses throughout the schoolday to offer the full span of curricular opportunities to students from both former districts. So it's also inaccurate to say that the students have not been merged academically.

 

So, I say, let's take the high road and congratulate Russell on having a fine team and playing a hard-fought game. And let's also take our hats off to the Mercer County Titans and congratulate these young men on, not only bringing home a championship, but also helping bring the community closer together.

2a , 4a or 5a doesn't matter . From what I saw today , Mercer had no real advantage talent or coaching wise over recent Devil and Belfry championship teams ... At Russell we knew this going in ...

The Mercer coaches, players and fans should be proud of their championship...Should there be a asterisk? No! Is it somewhat tainted? Unfortunately yes.

You know I don't think for one minute that the Mercer team should have an asterisk. They won this game fair and square on the field.

 

Now the KHSAA who watches player transfers like a hawk so that no team will have an unfair advantage???? They are suspect in this one. Who ever runs that shop up there in the glass bubble needs to be fired. They did not drop the ball for Mercer they dropped the for each and every Coach, and Football player that plays in 2-A. How do you think all those players who sat at home today because they were beat by a team that had no business competing in 2-A. Who would have played Russell?? O. C.?? or anyone of the other teams along the way that Mercer stomped along the way.

 

I have no problem with the players and coaches of Mercer. Congratulation on your championship. I do have a problem with that KHSAA guy or gale who sits at the top and let each and every football player who plays in class 2-A down. These kids will never know what would have happened had a team not been afforded the opportunity to have an unfair advantage. If you think for one minute that each and everyone of them is not talking about, think again. What was KHSAA thinking about.

 

It's simple consolidate and play in 2-A with no post season play, or field two football teams. They rule individual transfers with an iron fist. How could they let this one get by?

It's too late , my only frustration is one of teams in 2a should have stepped up and bailed out the KHSAA by actually beating Mercer ..

 

As expected , the Devils proved capable but did not get it done ...

Mercer won 2A by beating the best team in 2A .. So they are the champs

 

Life isn't fair and the kids got this lesson early ... courtesy the KHSAA ... we agree ..

Mercer an asterisk? No

 

You might want to give one to Russell though.

All of you all get on here and talk about how big Mercer's numbers are and how many kids and how its not fair but if you look in the program and the number of kids enrolled at each 2a school that competed today Mercer is up on Russel by 30! Thats not very many at all. So I dont want to here that its not fair we were to big of a school to play in 2a and all this other garbage.
