When was the last time Mayfield had a down year?

Featured Replies

How does Mayfield continue to be good year in and year out for a small school? When was the last time they had a losing record?

At this point, I think football is ingrained in the DNA of that community. After five decades of excellence, the expectations are always high and I think the kids there understand what came before them and take pride in upholding the legacy and tradition of Mayfield football. They seem to embrace those expectations and the pressure that comes with it.

Like TP94 said above, that 7-6 year in '08 was the last "down year" they had. To find the last losing season, you have to go all the way back to the 60's. I'm not sure about an exact year, though. Jack Morris became the head coach in '69 and they've been rolling ever since.

I remember posts on this site claiming they we're on a down spiral. It's been many years and I think any school in the state would accept a down season of seven wins.

As a Caldwell County fan, I'd say Mayfield's last down year in football was probably sometime around 1776 or so. We had some success against them during the Sindelar years, but even with that special talent at QB we went 2-2 against them.

I don’t know what the overall record was but the year Mayfield lost to Murray in the playoffs was a DOWN year.

That date in history is #2 behind Pearl Harbor as a “Date that will live in infamy.” As far as Mayfield believes.

In 2008, they were 7-6 which would be down by their standards.

That was the year they got beat by Crittenden County in the playoffs. Beechwood fans often comment that the years Beechwood has a team that probably would beat Mayfield, Mayfield gets beat before they get to Beechwood. Beechwood won the state title in 2008 and beat Crittenden County 34-0 in the semifinals.

Some stats for you about Mayfield:

-They've been to the playoffs 46 times in the last 52 years

-They've advanced to at least the state semifinals in 38 of their 46 playoff appearances

-They've missed the state semifinals only five times since 1980 (1982, 1997, 1999, 2007, 2008)

-They've advanced to at least the regional final every year from 1982 to present except in 1997

So the answer is probably...never.

The consistency is mind boggling. There's just something in the water there.

A down year for Mayfield is losing in the Semi's and to one of their rivals.

Trick Question: The answer is never.

I think in 2007 and 2008 they lost their district twice in a row. Fulton City believe it or not beat them in 2006 but had to vacate the win. Crittenden beat them twice in one year in 2007 when they went 7-6.

Beechwood would have beat them handily in 99 and 2008.

All of this talk of Beechwood would have beat Mayfield. I'm by no means a Mayfield fan, but I have 1 question for y'all. Has Beechwood ever beaten Mayfield? Mayfield is a force whenever they walk on the field.

They lost to Fulton City in 2007. Lost to Crittenden twice in 2008. One of them being in the Regional round of playoffs. 2006 Mayfield went 11-3 and lost at Danville in the State Semis.

When Mayfield lost to Fulton City in 2007 that was their first ever district loss since moving to 1A in 1995. They were 48-0 in district play from 1995-2006. They haven't lost a district game since 2008.

2009 is when Mayfield really started spreading out the offense and going to the air way more than they had traditionally and they have never looked back since.
