Futurecoach, I agree with your observations. My point was not ability at all, it was strictly regarding his total indecisiveness under the intense pressure of the moments. Some learn, some shrink and never overcome. I certainly hope the growth blossoms. When he was told to penetrate (taking decisions out of the equation) we saw a spark...with the exception of the one missed layup. In pressure we all know physical errors can become an avalanche for some players.

Something dumb. How come they wheeled in Okeke during the 2nd half? Why couldn't he have just been there for the whole game? It's not like he was on his death bed or something. Seemed weird unless they wanted to orchestrate some type of emotional/motivational thing for the rest of the team.

I agree with @John Anthony on this question. Peat, imo had that move set up / scripted before hand.

I still have a sick feeling in my gut over this one.

Today, the freshmen played like freshmen. That can always happen when you run the program like it is being run.

 

Is it time to rethink the roster? Sprinkle in some players who might stay at UK 3, even 4 years? Recruit 4-5 one and done possibles and let the rest of the roster mature?

 

EXACTLY! I have said this for years. This formula doesn't work. It's worked 1 time since Cal has been there. Get the 2-3 star kids that will stay 3-4 years, get developed and sprinkle in 1 maybe 2 "one and dones" and I assure you they will be more successful. The only player that is ready to leave is PJ anyway IMO. Look at all the of the Final 4 teams rosters and you will find kids that have been in the program 2-3 years. UK and Duke were ousted by mature rosters led by Jr PGs who put their teams on their backs and delivered victories. Heck, Duke was done in by a 3 from a 5th year walk-on! To go even further, Duke got really lucky and should have a lost to UCF or VT who have seasoned rosters as well.

UConn won 2 of the last 3 championships with seasoned rosters and all 4 of the Final 4 squads are not littered with 1 and dones. Experience and development matter.

I really don't think you can say the one and done formula has ever worked. That team with Anthony Davis started Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb who were sophomores with Sr. Darius Miller as sixth man. Plus Davis was so good he almost skews that team as proving one and dones win titles. How often does an Anthony Davis come along?

So thankful we were able to land EJ Montgomery over Zion Williamson this last year. EJ will most likely return and give you what you want.

Teams ebb and flow with roster turnovers. People act like the group of teams with the top talent aren't even competitive with more "mature" rosters. Be thankful for the formula because it has equalized the playing field.

 

And UK was exactly what people are clamoring for this year. Not super elite talent and we are still in the same place. No person saw SGA being a one-and-done prospect last year. If you did, you should be working in a front office with other NBA execs. With him, UK might have been the favorite.

Shoot just look at the comments about Hagans yesterday. Yet some think getting less talented guys is the answer. Every fan thinks they have the answer, but there is no answer especially with this fan base. You are dead on about SGA. Cal gets labeled as a guy who only gets one and done guys. However he cant help the guys he probably thinks will be here a couple years does better than expected. Shoot the last 4 pgs he brought here he didnt probably think they be one and done. SGA surprised everyone. Green was never going to be a one and done, and he didnt want to mature and develop here. Hagans and Quickley are getting torn up about how they played, even though both guys will be back. UK fans arent not patient enough to wait for players to develop.

One thing I started thinking of is I wonder how this team would have done if Hagans didnt reclassify and did wait until next year. Would this team have made it further with Green as the pg? Obviously it was a bad fit with all the guards here once Hagans came. But if Hagans didnt, then Green probably starts at pg. The defense may have not be as good, but offensively they should have been better. If they collapsed in the big guys, they wouldn't be able to leave Green like they did Hagans. So just a thought that crossed my head today if it could have led to a different result if Hagans didnt reclassify and had came next year instead.
