May 25, 20188 yr The NFL only started having players on the field for the anthem after 9/11 I believe. Possibly, it makes sense because if you remember we were all Patriots on 9/12. We all felt the same way and wanted the same thing. That feeling has worn off unfortunately.
May 25, 20188 yr Dont patronize me. I know what the weekend is about. Playing the national anthem at sporting events doesn’t make us more patriotic. Disrespecting the flag does make you less patriotic. Enjoy your hot dog and soda!
May 25, 20188 yr The NFL only started having players on the field for the anthem after 9/11 I believe. Fake patriotism.
May 25, 20188 yr Disrespecting the flag does make you less patriotic. Enjoy your hot dog and soda! Then you better tell all the people that wear flags on articles of clothing, the people in the concourses and throughout the stadiums that don't stop etc that they are disrespecting the flag too. You (this is a general 'you') can't pick and choose which acts to be offended by based on who is doing them and expect to be taken serious.
May 25, 20188 yr I will agree with you if the anthem at games is this divisive then maybe it is time to end it. It's only divisive because people pick and choose what to be offended about. Who knew black men taking a knee to PEACEFULLY protest (as they were told by EVERYONE to do) would cause such an uproar...
May 25, 20188 yr Disrespecting the flag does make you less patriotic. Enjoy your hot dog and soda! This has always been and continues to be probably the laziest take in this entire argument. It was literally never about the flag or the military, as has been stated by those who were kneeling. But lets ignore that and pretend to be offended.
May 25, 20188 yr Doesn’t the NFL make money off of showing patriotism? I’m thinking there is some kind of money deal with the NFL and Armed Forces in which patriotism is bought and paid for display at the games. I’d have to look it up but I know the article about it floating around the internet. Edit: I found the link. In this link it describes the deal between the Department of Defense and the NFL in which patriotism is bought and paid for. “As recently as 2015, the Department of Defense was doling out millions to the NFL for such things as military flyovers, flag unfurlings, emotional color guard ceremonies, enlistment campaigns, and — interestingly enough — national anthem performances. Additionally, according to Vice, the NFL’s policy on players standing for the national anthem also changed in 2009, with athletes “encouraged”thereafter to participate. Prior to that, teams were not given any specific instructions on the matter; some chose to remain in the locker room until after opening ceremonies were completed.” How the NFL sold patriotism to the U.S. military for millions – ThinkProgress #FakePatriotism
May 25, 20188 yr Possibly, it makes sense because if you remember we were all Patriots on 9/12. We all felt the same way and wanted the same thing. That feeling has worn off unfortunately. The feeling hasn’t worn off. Public displays of patriotism doesn’t cause the feelings of concern for the safety of our country to disappear.
May 25, 20188 yr The NFL only started having players on the field for the anthem after 9/11 I believe. I guess that there was no such thing as patriotism before then.

May 25, 20188 yr Let’s not forget the network camera operators as well. I bet the concession stands and merchandise booths in NFL stadiums remain open and buzzing while the anthem is playing.
May 25, 20188 yr When would we play it then? Playing it before a kids game, that grown men get paid millions to play only because there are thousands of men and women in attendance who keep or have kept the country free, so the game can go on is a good salute. Can't you use the argument of "a good salute" to those "who keep or have kept the country free" for anything? I have freedom to go to a movie but they don't play the anthem before the show starts. I have freedom to fly on an airplane but they don't play the anthem during takeoff. I have freedom to go to church but we don't play it before the minister steps up to the pulpit. Why is football different?

Using that argument, we should play the anthem before literally everything we do. What makes the NFL, or any sporting event, different?
