And you wonder why Kaepernick isn't getting picked up by anyone.

Nah. I know why.

You guys think Kerr is aware that the NBA has required players to stand for the anthem for the last 20 years?

Absolutely. He’s speaking on how this situation has been handled by the NFL as well as how the NFL differs from the NBA when it comes to allowing their employees to use their voice in social issues “while on the clock”. Steve Kerr has long been outspoken on social issues in America.

I was just going to say the same thing. It's in the NBA's rules they must stand for the anthem.

Yes. Agreed upon by the player’s union and the owners. Big difference from what took place yesterday.

I understand that. And I think it's dumb that there's a rule at all. As you've said, this whole thing was done and over with until the league decided to bring it back to the spotlight.

I just find it ironic that he's criticizing the NFL for requiring players to stand for the anthem when the NBA has been doing for decades.

Kerr has definitely been outspoken on a lot of things. He reminds me a lot of Pop in that regard, he's just not as much of a tool when he does it. :lol2:

Reading his full quote Steve Kerr was very clear and precise about what he feels went down yesterday. It can’t be posted here on BGP so if interested in what his full quote was then it is an easy find on twitter.

Also ironically the NBA and the players came to an agreement about standing for the anthem after Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf would continue to sit on the bench during the anthem. When he sat he wasn’t really protesting anything in particular like Kaepernick was. He was eventually blackballed like Kaepernick.

This is even less of a story if it is an agreed upon resolution by the players and owners.

I still think the best way the NFL could have handled this was just start playing the anthem before bringing the players out of the locker room.

Doesn’t the NFL make money off of showing patriotism? I’m thinking there is some kind of money deal with the NFL and Armed Forces in which patriotism is bought and paid for display at the games. I’d have to look it up but I know the article about it floating around the internet.

Edit:

I found the link. In this link it describes the deal between the Department of Defense and the NFL in which patriotism is bought and paid for.

“As recently as 2015, the Department of Defense was doling out millions to the NFL for such things as military flyovers, flag unfurlings, emotional color guard ceremonies, enlistment campaigns, and — interestingly enough — national anthem performances. Additionally, according to Vice, the NFL’s policy on players standing for the national anthem also changed in 2009, with athletes “encouraged”thereafter to participate. Prior to that, teams were not given any specific instructions on the matter; some chose to remain in the locker room until after opening ceremonies were completed.”

I’ve never understood why it HAS to be played at every sporting in the country.

I’ve never understood why it HAS to be played at every sporting in the country.

It was rarely played during my high school basketball career in the 70’s and Only during District and Regional Tournament games in baseball. And no one ever thought twice about it.

It doesn't.

NFL national anthem policy just makes patriotism cheap as hell - SBNation.com

Funny passage talking about how before PA systems teams would have to hire a band to play the Anthem.

10) In short: If leagues back in the day had to pay a dollar for the anthem every time they played it, they wouldn’t have. Their patriotism was literally as cheap as it gets. The part in Team America in “Freedom isn’t free” when they quantify freedom as costing exactly a dollar and five cents? We’re there.

I hope you stop and appreciate what this weekend is all about. It's not just a bonus holiday to grill and start the summer off.
