NFL Anthem "Policy" - Winners and Losers

Featured Replies

The NFL owners trying to act patriotic is embarrassing. If their core audience were anti-military this would not be happening. They're using soldiers blood out of fear for their P&L.

I hope you stop and appreciate what this weekend is all about. It's not just a bonus holiday to grill and start the summer off.

My bro in the military calls it freedom theft. It sucks.

Doesn’t the NFL make money off of showing patriotism? I’m thinking there is some kind of money deal with the NFL and Armed Forces in which patriotism is bought and paid for display at the games. I’d have to look it up but I know the article about it floating around the internet.

Edit:

I found the link. In this link it describes the deal between the Department of Defense and the NFL in which patriotism is bought and paid for.

“As recently as 2015, the Department of Defense was doling out millions to the NFL for such things as military flyovers, flag unfurlings, emotional color guard ceremonies, enlistment campaigns, and — interestingly enough — national anthem performances. Additionally, according to Vice, the NFL’s policy on players standing for the national anthem also changed in 2009, with athletes “encouraged”thereafter to participate. Prior to that, teams were not given any specific instructions on the matter; some chose to remain in the locker room until after opening ceremonies were completed.”

On tangent everyone, I want to shout out to @PurplePride92 for giving everyone a "model how to post" on sharing a link on BGP.

Back on topic, this is a good thread, as I sit her pondering I hope the next Labor Agreement between the Players and League is a model of progress and not business as usual.

I get the anger from some. But censorship from an employer isn't new. Who knows it could hurt the league and they could reverse it. My employer has strict rules. We have very strict social media rules. We also need approval from our company to donate or volunteer to any political campaign.

NFL probably should of put this rule in place years ago. Every large corporations goal should be to remain neutral on any divisive topic. Everybodies money is green and it's the job of a corporation to get as much of it as possible.

Regardless of what the NFL decided they were going to anger a large segment of the population. If I had to guess they did a study to see where a majority of their concerns fell on the issue.

And you wonder why Kaepernick isn't getting picked up by anyone.

Why isn't he?

Dont patronize me. I know what the weekend is about. Playing the national anthem at sporting events doesn’t make us more patriotic.

I will agree with you if the anthem at games is this divisive then maybe it is time to end it.

How is staying in the lockerroom any better than kneeling?

If your asking for a response I would say staying in the locker room doesn't allow public displays of what many would see as disrespect to the flag. You may not agree but that would be the argument.

At many college games, the national anthem is played while the players are still in the locker room. This has been the case for many years.

The NFL only started having players on the field for the anthem after 9/11 I believe.

That sounds likely. Maybe it's time to go back into the locker room.

My thought is that if a player or two stays in the lockerroom it's going to become known and made public on social media/TV. We would be at the same point - "why are you disrespecting the military?"

The irony on this topic is at a high level. But many reasons why are not permitted in this outlet.

When would we play it then? Playing it before a kids game, that grown men get paid millions to play only because there are thousands of men and women in attendance who keep or have kept the country free, so the game can go on is a good salute. Erasing it because the pro kneel crowd doesn’t like it is selfish.
