Congrats to the Colonels! Very happy for all members of the team, coaching staff and administration. Being the last one standing at the end of the season is why you all have worked so hard this year. As a fan, I say Thank you for the enjoyment you have provided me this year. Now, enjoy it for a bit, and then get back to work! Next year will be here before you know it.

 

Now some random thoughts and comments from the game

 

1) The Finals of the Ky Sweet Sixteen basketball tourney is such an awesome event and environment is just awesome. I don't know how you would make it better

2) The crazies were entertaining the entire tournament. Way to represent.

3) I HATE when we start to play not to lose at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

4) The big guy from Scott County- Moreno, you can tell is a very good player but it seemed like he did not try and dominate for his team. Not sure if was coaching or what

5) I was shocked at the relatively small number of Scott County students there. Being it was the finals, the size of the school, and the proximity to Rupp, I expected there to be a good back and forth banter between the two student sections. There really was none.

6)I did not like the SC students calling a colonel player ugly while he was shooting free throws. I hate personal attacks. Maybe the crazies did too as I was farther from them, but I did not hear them. If they did shame on them.

7) I also hate hearing the bull :poop: chant when they feel the ref made a bad call

8) Personally I thought it was a well officiated game. Let them play but not get too physical

9) Football and Basketball are in the books, so now let's get baseball!

I only saw two Scott County games, but that was a recurring chant in both games.

Congratulations to the Colonels. They had the best combination of skill, talent and depth I saw all year. They earned this state championship trophy.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey was there watching not only CJ Fredrick but also Michael Moreno who he has offered.

If you were talking about any other team besides CovCath I might agree with you, but in their case with having such great ball handlers it's a matter of smart strategy on their part to work the clock, only shoot when you have a close open look, and have the chance of being fouled in the process.

 

Once they have a decent lead it's more effective for them to operate this way rather than continuing with the open court track meet that only increases the chances that their opponent can capitalize off of that kind of pace, and the increased chances of turnovers.

 

This way might be boring to the fans, but it will cut down on their opponents possessions.

 

The guy on the online broadcast also complained about this very thing even while CovCath continued to widen the gap. I thought to myself "dude do you realize that their lead has increased (at the time from 11 to 19) all the while you've been complaining about this mode of strategy?"

 

Certainly some teams shouldn't even consider it because they won't be able to handle the pressure while watching their lead evaporate, but this is the way CovCath has won closer competitive games all season, and they are a fine example of the best way to execute it.

 

They have the players who can do it, and they do it well. The get the "W" in the smartest most efficient and effective way possible, and while the fans still would like to see more action 'til the final horn sounds, I'm sure they're quite content with winning the championship game by 18, and not concerned that it wasn't by 28, or 38.

Outstanding! Congratulations to CCH on a superb season. Northern Kentucky is proud of you. What a run you've been on.

You have to give Coach Rutsatz credit for loading up the schedule this year. His non-9th region schedule was loaded. I haven't checked to see how the Florida teams fared but I do know that Moeller , who CCH beat, is in the large-school final 4.

Hate to see SC play their worst game of the year when it mattered most. Heck of a young team they have. They will be back and better than ever. Have a couple of underclassmen that you will open some eyes next year. Kudos to Cov Cath.

Not buying the “worst game of the year” defense. Scott Co is very, very good. They ran into a buzzsaw today. It happens sometimes.

Back to the game. I thought Scott County was hesitant to attack in the paint. Settled for 3's. Made some, but not nearly enough.

 

Listened on the radio (great job all tourney by the play by play guys), they interviewed Hicks at half time. He said was telling his guys to drive but they were deciding to just settle for long shots

This speaks volumes of great things to come again next season for the Colonels. I really like Fleek's game, and I'm already savoring what players like him, Thelen and many of their other talented guys will bring to the table when they step into their bigger roles that IMO will again see them winning the 9th and heading off to Rupp to compete as the 2018 Defending State Champs. No doubt teams like Scott County will again be tough, but I've no problem with seeing a Coach Ruthsatz lead Colonels team again being right there in the thick of things.
