I hear he just really likes Miami. Great school and has a chance to play right away. Would be surprised if he de-commits.

AJ Mayer was named LaRosa's Player f the Week recently. He had a quote that said one of his goals is to start all 4 years in college. I believe that is a big factor in why he likes Miami. He probably feels like he has a chance to start all 4 years there, which would be much more difficult at high level BCS schools.

Great observations but don't over reach Miami is a good fit. AJ is great but comparing him to Ben is reaching. Simply because he's not 6'5. Then there's other things, I think Miami is a good fit for both! They both play right away, have a chance at the league and maybe resurrect Miami's program.

I love it! Keeping quiet over here. Waiting to see what unfolds after the season. Kinda reminds me of the basketball player from Scott last year. Was committed early to a smaller school. Tore it up his senior year especially during the tournament and switched to a bigger school. Was just named freshman player of the week...... Hope he is just focusing in on Saturday. On the other hand.... I would never blame him for Miami... Start right away and a top notch school academically!!! Go AJ and go Colonels!!!

With football in particular, a verbal commit does not keep other schools from coming at you hard. There is no honor within the coaching circles to respect verbal commitments. If other bigger schools want AJ they will make a run at him. If he stays with Miami of Ohio it will bear out that other schools did not come after him or he told them all he was not interested. His verbal commit will not keep any other school away.

I never have seen a negative in committing in football, schools will continue to recruit you. But in basketball they seem to have more of a code to not continue recruiting committed players.

I agree that it's a fine fit for A.J... Wasn't really comparing him to Ben, but just pointing out that if it was good enough for Ben, then I don't see any problem for A.J.

Miami is a great school and the coaching staff there is making strides with the program. Both Mayer and Butler will make the team that much better.

Perhaps it's education first for him. Not everyone chooses a school for athletic reasons first, and except for the rare few, no one should choose solely based on athletic reasons. There's a lot of really good reasons to go to MU.

I've seen Mayer play three times. The first time was in 2015 against St. X at Nippert (which was a 57-7 win for X), second was last year against Ryle and the third was last year against Beechwood. I see the talent, but I think it's a stretch to say he's Big 10 talent. Even if he'd get an offer from a good P5 school, why go there and risk not ever being the starter when you could go to a good school and be able to compete right from the start?

His arm strength and accuracy improved leaps and bounds over last year. A summer spent working on QB fundamentals and not baseball did him a world of good.

I had the mindset that if he can't do it against the big boys, he shouldn't get the hype. Plus... it wasn't as if he played okay. They got demolished. But yes, you can't judge a sophomore going against that defense. I wish I could've gotten to watch him this year.
