Brent Grover from Highlands played in the Army All American game and had a good career at Purdue after being recruited very heavily. Kam Butler is as close of a player to him as you will find. I don’t get why he didn’t have more offers. He is a future DE at the college level with great athleticism and instincts. Unless his size is really marked up in the program, what I saw on Hudl all year doesn’t add up.

 

Kam had 15 offers but felt most comfortable at Miami plus he has a chance to play very early.

He did have a lot of offers. But, I think the point is that he and AJ only had one "Power 5" offer between them. Were they good enough to be in the Army All-American Game? Who knows. I do know, however, that they both could have played at Purdue, IU, UL, UK, UC and any other handful of teams in one of the Power 5 conferences.

 

This goes to show how critical your Sophomore season is in the recruiting cycle. While both of these guys played, CCH had a down year and didn't have an older player who some of the colleges were after. Compare that to what Michael Mayer has experienced. Not taking anything away from the kid because he has all the tools a Power 5 is looking for, but to say he hasn't benefited from the enormous success of this team during his Sophomore year would ignore the obvious.

They shouldn’t, it’s not meant to be disrespect, it’s meant to answer the question of the thread. Keep in mind we’re talking OH vs KY. If Mayer “could compete” with some of the good ones in Ohio, it’s why he’s going to play on Saturday’s.

Totally agree, AJ was the straw that stirred the drink at CovCath. His accuracy, arm strength, feet and most of all Moxy rightfully earned him a D-1 Scholly.

I’ll attempt to answer. I know AJ fairly well. School is extremely important to him. He is not placing his eggs in one basket called the NFL. He has plans and unlike many at his age, he’s looking ahead.

He also has a cousin who was all everything in baseball for Cch and UK. That has translated into a pro career but not a hugely successful one ( by MLB standards, not mine ). He has seen how hard it is to play professionally and just how good you have to be to make it.

I think Miami is perfect for him. I wish him success there and if he goes further, great. If not he will be just fine with his education from a very above average university.

Success of a team has very minimal impact with recruiting. Now having other legit talented older players ahead of you helps, because when teams come to see those guys. They also could see young studs like him. Other than that the best way to get noticed early is going to various camps.
