Bowling Green, a 5A team, is 3-2 on the season. There are ten 5A teams that have a better record than the Purples. Are the Purples the 11th best team in Class 5A? Your logic makes no sense.

And Ohio State is certainly not a top ten team. The coaches poll really messed that one up, UK is 3-0 at the moment.

You sound offended. I'm just expressing an opinion. I'm probably off on the Ashland ranking, they should be in the 5 to 8 range but no way in hades is a 1-4 team near the top 10. I'd substitute Bourbon County or Mason County in their place. Wins against ranked teams matter more than near wins in my book. Just an opinion. Don't take it so personal.

I'm certainly not offended, nor is it personal to me. My team is 5A South Oldham. I've just watched post after post ask you to provide a top ten and you don't, thus my comment that it's easy to complain, but hard to put yourself out there and give a top ten.

That's really comparing apples and oranges because there are a lot of very good teams in college football. There really aren't that many really good teams in high school football and even less in 4A.

 

The BluegrassPreps mindset is the expectation that a team would beat all the teams behind them and lose to the ones ahead of them in a given week. It always has been that way. We don't now, nor would we ever rank it purely based on records. We have a different mindset than you, and that's OK. The AP Poll does it how they like it, the Lit ratings do theirs, etc. That the quoted is what a poll should look like is your opinion. When you say "that's not how it works", that is still just your opinion.

 

My personal opinion is that while Western is 1-4, many (most) of the other teams in 4A would get absolutely dragged by that schedule, and probably worse than Western did. Same with Hopkinsville - who has been overlooked here - which is also 1-4 and rated in the top 10. There's more to our rankings than pure wins and losses, and year after year, I'd put our body of work up against the others. Logan County was mentioned in this thread by someone else, but they're rated 8th in the AP Poll right now because they're 5-0. I'm thrilled for Logan County and the season they're having, but there are a good deal of teams below them in those rankings that would beat them, and handily.

 

FWIW, I really appreciate seeing someone come in and challenge the ranks though. So many weeks no one is discussing 4A!

I don't see a one point loss to central all that impressive. Central doesn't have much of an offense this year and neither does manual Western was a 4 win team last year and will probably be a 4 win team this year and finish 3rd in their district

 

Beats me. Central beat Fern Creek 29-0, and we know Fern Creek is good based on how they've played the likes of Butler and DeSales. Manual has gone out and beaten Ballard in addition to their own close losses to Fern Creek and Central. There's a degree of circular logic with Louisville football, but the eye tests seem to indicate a lot of close games between some pretty strong programs.

 

I honestly believe Western could win every game for the rest of their year. The only game I wouldn't mark them as a clear, clear favorite in is John Hardin, and that's because John Hardin has been very Jekyll and Hyde. We can disagree on where Western will be, but I can't agree as to how impressive those results are against programs like Central and Manual. Just look at how the out of class teams have absolutely blasted 4A teams this season.

What some need to realize is that 4A is a deeply, deeply flawed class. We all know Johnson Central is #1. We think Wayne County, Collins, and Rockcastle County are probably the best teams after that. Beyond that, to me, it's rearranging chairs on the Titanic. There are flies on everyone. Consider Franklin-Simpson. They are a 2-3 team that has been running clocked twice. Both of those were to teams that are in the top 4 of their classes, but still, running clocked. They also lost to Meade County in a nail-biter this past week. Their best win is over a Greenwood team that appears to be in full decline from a season ago. But when you consider the caliber of opponents in losses and the fact that Meade County demolished one of Franklin's peers by 45 (Shelby County), it becomes a little less cut and dry. There are situations like that up and down the rankings.

 

FS has played five games. Four have been running clocks. The Meade County game was a back and forth nail biter but was flawed by excessive officiating.

 

The Shelby v Meade game was played in a hurricane that greatly affected Shelby CO's option offense. Lots of fumbles.

 

4A may be flawed but with the exception of JC it should be competitive.

Fair enough. But, Ashland's best win is against 1A#5 Raceland. There are better wins for teams you don't even have ranked. For instance, Bourbon County has a win against 2A#8 Somerset.

As you can see from all the other comments, at this point in the season and from here on out, strength of schedule is at least equal and to some extent more important than wins and losses in judging teams. Bourbon County is 1-1 in games against good quality opponents, so the jury is still out on them somewhat.

 

If you want to see Bourbon County ranked, this week's game is very important. If Bourbon County is a top 10 team, they will win this week. Madison Central is not as good as Somerset or Madison Southern, but is significantly better than Owen County and Rowan County. A win this week over Madison Central gives Bourbon County a solid win to add to their resume. I don't know if a win gets them in the top 10, but they will be definitely be worth considering as a top 10 team.

Fwiw, Ashland is sixth by the MaxPreps computer, sixth by the CalPreps computer and ninth by the Herald-Leader computer. But they all take in OVERALL results and not how teams are playing CURRENTLY. Big difference.

 

Second, overall record should NEVER be in the end-all, be-all when it comes to human-produced rankings. About 10 years ago, Trinity opened 0-4 because it was playing out of state powerhouses and some folks wanted the Rocks out of the top 10. Trinity still won the title that year. More recently, LexCath is playing an absolutely brutal schedule THIS year. I do NOT care what the Knights' record is, there are not ten 3A teams better than the Knights.

In a class which doesn't usually get much discussion, this thread has blown up.

 

Anyway, BGP is the best rankings out there IMO. Their voters are knowledgeable on the game and don't let W-L records dictate their rankings. That's the problem with the AP, they vote primarily on W-L instead of all around strength or performance.

Madison Central is significantly better than Madison Southern seeing that they beat them 37-13 2 weeks ago.

There are 129 teams involved in the FBS rankings, they should look like that. 4A has 40 teams...it won't look like that.
