Who in the 6-10 range is playing better ball than Ashland right now? If you're going to criticize the rankings lets be constructive and explain who is better than them and why.

Yeah ok.

Just wait a month or so and more then likely they will meet in a playoff game. Ashland has played Bourbon the past 2 seasons and thumped them both times. Last years score was 43-13.

Also, Ashland lost to Harlan County who has a 1-4 record with one of those losses being to Hazard. Somerset beat Hazard & Bourbon beat Somerset.

 

Harlan County isn't a bad team. They lost to a fair healthy hazard team with its big running back. Somerset beat Hazard but Hazard did not play the 2nd half with it's runningback. Anything can happen the first game of the season. After that then things start to straighten out.

 

Harlan County other loss are to a 4-1 Tates Creek team, a 3-1 Knox Central, and a 4-1 Wayne County team. I think they also rested their starters the past two games for district play.

I am a homer and also a realist. Ashland is a few steps or 10 behind Johnson Central but you take Johnson Central out of 4A and I think Ashland could beat any other team.

What some need to realize is that 4A is a deeply, deeply flawed class. We all know Johnson Central is #1. We think Wayne County, Collins, and Rockcastle County are probably the best teams after that. Beyond that, to me, it's rearranging chairs on the Titanic. There are flies on everyone. Consider Franklin-Simpson. They are a 2-3 team that has been running clocked twice. Both of those were to teams that are in the top 4 of their classes, but still, running clocked. They also lost to Meade County in a nail-biter this past week. Their best win is over a Greenwood team that appears to be in full decline from a season ago. But when you consider the caliber of opponents in losses and the fact that Meade County demolished one of Franklin's peers by 45 (Shelby County), it becomes a little less cut and dry. There are situations like that up and down the rankings.

It was the first game of the season and Ashland started the season with essentially all new offensive linemen, their starting center was out as well with a broken snapping hand. Since then the line play and offense in general has been playing better every week. The close loss to a very good George Washington team is more telling about where Ashland stands at the moment than the early season loss at Harlan County.

 

Who would you put in front of them? The only team I could even think of is Shelby County but they don't even have a win against a top ten team and barely squeaked by a bad Bullitt East team last week.

 

Why should Ashland be rewarded for being short-handed their first game of the year when other teams are penalized for it? Bourbon County was used as an example by Ram because they had a close win against a bad Rowan County team. As stated above, Bourbon County was playing that game without 6 starters and also their head coach was suspended. As a matter of fact, Bourbon's only loss was to Madison Southern and that was without the starting RB/LB, WR/Safety and CB. As I said before, no big deal.

Do not sleep on Wayne or Collins. Boyle is just that good. Never mind they are 3A, they are a good football team and would be a top team in 4/5A. Remember this.

The BGP rankings are fluid and a lot goes into them, but most importantly it's about how a particular team is playing at the current point in time. Not how they played in their opening game or how they are expected to be playing by season's end. It's a week by week process and there is a lot of thought put into the rankings, rather than just looking at records and putting a number beside a team.

 

And I promise you there is no homer'ism with the rankings.

The line has improved greatly since that game as well as the offensive production and Ashland's defense has only given up 7 points per game since the Harlan County game, while playing some solid teams along the way.

This. I believe the top 10 in 1A, 2A and 3A would match up very well with the 4A squads.
