President Trump firing the guy allegedly investigating him and/or investigating people in his campaign and their ties to Russian operatives, bad timing, bad optics, it is a cover up to keep the FBI from getting the truth of the matter on alleged Russian involvement/collusion in our election, FBI Agents say Comey was the only director that cared about them.

Comey was reviled by both sides. The left blames the timing of his disclosures and the right is appalled that he did not bring charges against HRC. The whole Russia thing is a distract and redirect away from the failings of the DNC. Lesson for future FBI directors : When the investigation gets political, punt to an independent investigator.

If you look look at what you have posted, it seems the facts for his firing are pretty substantial.

I thought he always tried sticking his nose into politics and that's not his role.

 

His job was to catch the leakers and he couldn't even do that.

I haven't seen anybody say he shouldn't have been fired.

 

What I have seen a lot of is that the timing does not look good.

I also think you nailed all the points that both sides would say caused his termination.

 

However I think there is going to be a lot more stuff Trump does that is not protocol for a sitting president. Remember this guy is not a politician. He makes moves that are not exactly calculated and sometimes that brings great rewards and sometimes will bring him a lot of grief like this firing.

 

On a personal side, I am with the others. Comey also, I think in his mind liked the limelight or he would not have done some of the things he was charged with. Not what you want out of the FBI director in my opinion.

Timing is probably as good as it was going to get. Trump had reportedly thought about firing him in January but was counseled against that as it would look really bad with the Russia stuff really taking off.

 

After testifying that he had saw no connection to Trump and Russia and that Trump wasn't being investigated this was probably the best time to let him go. If he had publicly stated that Trump was being investigated then it would have been impossible to let him go.

 

Both sides have wanted him fired...I'm still not sure that was the best thing. There has been some talk that the rank and file had lost confidence in him as their leader...if that's true then it may indeed be time for him to go.

I see two concerns with the firing.

 

Obviously, Comey was handling an investigation that may impact the current administration. That looks third worldish - firing someone who is investigating the leadership in an administration.

 

Second, what are the criteria to fire the FBI Director? This firing has put a gray area over the position. Can you fire the FBI Director because of political policy decisions? Do we really want to walk down that path? Previously, the FBI Director has been given reign to do the job as he deems necessary. With this firing the position starts to look more political and less about law enforcement and the rule of law.

 

Because of this firing, I will be shocked if an outside prosecutor is not brought on to complete the Russian investigation. Failure to do that throws shade on Trump and his administration, and by extension the Republican party if they do not bring on an independent prosecutor.

Former Assistant AG Terwiliger (sp?) was on one of the NPR programs this afternoon. His perspective was most reasonable and interesting. He said that Mr. Comey's transgressions began last July when he announced no charges would be filed after the email investigation. Mr. Terwiliger's perspective was that the timing is unfortunate, but that the event was inevitable. He also said that the FBI investigation would continue. Investigations don't end just because administration changes.

 

Very interesting to listen to him.

 

Another interesting perspective from Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana ®. He has no issue with the firing. But he feels the president owes it to the American people to explain his reasons and timing. Not because he thinks anything done was inappropriate, but in the interest of transparency.
