Smallhoops
As reported by TheVille30 in a different thread, the State House of Representatives has passed a bill that provides that home-schooled students must be allowed to try out for sports teams at the public school he or should would be attending if he or she was attending public school. The bill is not yet law, as it must now go to the State Senate for consideration. My initial reaction is that playing on a school's sports teams is a benefit a student enjoys because he or she attends that school. But I know there are counter arguments, such as why should a kid be deprived of playing organized sports because his or her parents have decided that, academically, home-schooling is best for the student. So, what do you think?
brooksville
No! You chose to be home schooled for a reason. If you're too good for public school education then you're too good for public school athletics.

Pioneer.Pride
Would a home schooled athlete be welcomed on a public school athletic team? Especially if taking a spot that would otherwise go to someone attending the school?

GrantNKY
Hell no. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If you want to be homeschooled you forego your right to play sports. Simple as that. Basically this says, "Our family doesn't like the education your school would provide our child and we think he would benefit from being homeschool, but can he still wear a jersey with the name of your school on the front?" You can't have your cake and eat it too.

With that said, I want to remind everyone of the current moratorium on political discussion here on the site. In this specific case, details of the law can be discussed only as it they apply directly within this bill. Any political remarks or commentary will get this thread closed immediately, and the members involved in that discussion may be subject to suspension. Wait, there's no political discussion on BGP right now. I must have missed that or something.
UKMustangFan
I lean towards no, but don't really have an issue with it either way. One thing to point out, it typically isn't the student making the decision to be home-schooled. I'd venture most kids would rather be in traditional schooling and interacting with kids their age. TheDeuce
Simple answer for me is no. You don't go to school there, you can't play sports there.
BigVMan23
I've always been somewhat torn on the subject as I hate to see kids go without sports. HOWEVER, there are always consequences to decisions made, and I come down on the side of if they don't go to school there then they can't represent the school in extracurricular activities, be it basketball, band or bass fishing. Bow88
No ... and I have a sister that home schools her two boys ... and pretty sure they would rather be in school with other kids ... not their choice but still shouldn't be able to play sports at a school ... and I am a big Tim Tebow fan , he is the poster boy for home schooling and high school sports ... but Florida is a state that allows this ...
