Should home-schooled students be allowed to play sports for schools they don't attend

Featured Replies

I say no. If it were possible for students to be home schooled and play for the public school, it would open Pandora's box for even more recruiting than we already have.

1000000000% no. You think transfers are bad now, just wait if this passes.

I think there is a good chance this bill passes.

If this gets passed in the Senate I will be surprised. I cant believe that KY Board of Education can be behind this, and their pockets are deep in the KY Senate.

I disagree with some of your reasons for homeschooling. Many kids are not homeschooled because parents think they are too good for a public school or do not like the education provided. I live in one of the top 3 school districts in the state and graduated from the same school. I specifically moved back here for the public education. I have 2 high school age children. My youngest goes to the public school and my oldest is homeschooled. Neither play sports. There were many reasons to be homeschooled; but it was not because I thought we would get a better education or I am too good for the school. So I am torn on whether to allow them to play sports for the local team. My oldest doesn't play a sport so it doesn't affect us. But if she was on a team when we went the homeschool route, she would have been devastated.

Sports are an extracurricular activity. It is not part of the "schooling". If I pay taxes for a school then they should be able to participate. Now if you are telling me that $0 of my tax dollars go to paying a coach or building a gym for extracurricular activities then they shouldn't be able to play.

Would anyone have an issue with Home Schooled students participating in KHSAA Individual Sports like Golf, Tennis, Wrestling, Track, Bass Fishing or Archery?

That's actually a great point that I hadn't considered. My "leaning towards no" stance is now firmly in the "I'm good either way" camp.

Nah, not enough angst. No carpet or Rupp on the line. The older I get and now that my last one is on his high school swan song, I can't see begrudging any kid, for whatever reason, a chance to play an organized sport. Probably not popular because everyone thinks they've got a shot at a title. Silly if you ask me.

I agree, there are only truly a handful of kids that could move the needle in any sport in a given year. Yet we potentially punish kids in many sports at varying degrees of aptitude because one kid might be a good player and play against us in a team sport.

I'd have been more excited to go to LBL to Fish in the finals than to Rupp or the Carpet, when I was in school.

Yes.
