It still is Mercer County high no matter how you look at it. The kids were allowed to attend either Mercer High school location they wanted. But, classes are held at both schools for some students.
Still, there is no reason Mercer County couldn't keep both schools open this year, or at least until the new facility to house all the students is ready, given the late date of the official decision to merge and the effects on other area schools' athletic programs.

Both schools are open. How hard is it to understand that the Harrodsburg school district is no longer? Both high schools are still open. They both are Mercer Co. If those are your student athletes then why can't they compete on your team? You are just stirring the pot. That's what the vote was for. Realize this. They saw the positives. ($$) You wont be able to find a better campus in the state when the school is built. Now all the kids in the county and the city will have the same opportunities. Harrodsburg was 3-8 last season. Before the Titans blew up that's all I heard. They wont be any better cause Harrodsburg was 3-8 last year. But, I knew better. I knew the talent that was not coming out for football since Alvis Johnson left the Harrodsburg program. Harrodsburg still had to vote on the merge. It passed. Whether Mercer voted to accept or deny the merge they had no choice. I think Mercer fielded a pretty good team that lost to the eventual state champions in Russell last year. It wasn't like they were desperate to field a competitive team. You can argue this all year. And I know you will cause it's the only natural thing you can do when you can't stop somthing. Just complain about it.

No one is blaming the kids, but that doesn't make it right for the kids who are out their working just as hard that have to play at a disadvantage--or did you forget about them???

I have never, ever seen a team rub Corbin's nose in it like Mercer did last week. To score 53 points and not even attempt a pass is utter and total domination. I played on a team that beat Corbin 34-0 and I thought we had done something, I'm amazed the Corbin fans haven't went totally bananas. Surely you will get better this year.

You don't even know who is out there. You don't have a dog in this fight anyway. Scrimmages don't count so you can't hold that Mercer beatdown of Somerset against them.

I think just to point out that Mercer SHOULD be doing this with the advantage that they have. Are you trying to say that this is some kind of miracle that has no explanation. You know what everyone that knows any thing about football can see what is going on here. I'm glad Mercer and H'burg have been able to get along and I'm sure they have a fine team. However, they should no more be able to play class 2A than Highlands should get to play class 1A. You know what? I think Highlands would actually decline to play for a title against smaller teams, but I guess that's just them.....

If I'm not mistaken Highlands has been playing "up" for years. Their enrollment would qualify them for AA, but they petitioned the state to play AAA. I'm not a Highlands fan, but I have to admit I respect what they do there.

No, Highlands is playing in the class they are supposed to be in. The KHSAA hasn't allowed teams to play up in class in several years.

Mercer Co. and Harrodsburg have come together very well in what could have been a delicate situation. Sure they have a numbers advantage this year, but whatever they accomplish as a team should not be diminished because of that. Most good teams with championship hopes play teams from larger classes and expect to beat them anyway, so the cream of 2A football(Russell, Belfry) will play the Titans come playoff time with expectations of winning and without excuses if they don't.

Are you sure? Wasn't Highlands supposed to play AA when the KHSAA re-aligned a couple years ago? Also, what about next year when them and CCH are playing in 5A instead of 4A? Not meaning to sound argumentative, just curious.

Yes I am sure about the past 10 years or so, nobody played up in class. I always get the year wrong, but I think it was 1995 when they stopped that practice, although it could have been 1999.

With the new alignment next year, the KHSAA allowed teams to petition for the chance to play up. Highlands and CCH were among the handful that were granted permission, and both will be playing in 5A in 2007.

And yet are we wrong? These 2 teams should be dominating the class that they're getting to play in on a technicality. The facts are this, neither of these teams would legally be able to play in their current class according to current enrollment numbers. However, due to an administrative oversight (how else do you explain teams getting to play with an unfair advantage--you don't see 1A teams being eligible for the 1AA playoffs) or just general laziness they're getting to play against smaller schools. Go on, dominate the teams that you shouldn't even get to play. We'll see what happens when you play in your own class. NO ONE can deny that Mercer and Western have an advantage. They shouldn't lose, at all in their class. And yet I have a feeling that Russell still isn't scared--just like I'm sure Mercer wouldn't be scared to play Highlands for both the 2 and 3A titles, after all if Mercer is allowed to play for the 2A title shouldn't Highlands? Why not just have a winner take all game--Mercer you'd be up for it wouldn't you?

In Mercers defense, they have no more of an adantage than the St X and Trinitys do every year, based on #s alone...it seems to me, just because mercer hasn't been one of the elite teams for years, that theres some animosity for there success..It's not there fault and they still have to play the games, so, let the chips fall where they may..this is a 1 year thing, so, lets not make a big deal of it...Compare the #s of T and x with the #s of the smaller 4a schools and you'll see alot more than just 300 kids difference, so, imo, its alot fairer than that...

How hard is it for you to understand that we know Harrodsburg's school district no longer exists? It doesn't change the fact that Mercer County could have chosen to to keep two separate high schools open until the new facility is completed.

So did a lot of others.

I don't remember anyone maintaining that Mercer wouldn't be helped by the merger. Every comment I remember was that Harrodsburg had several athletes that would help the team.

Whether Mercer voted to accept or deny the merge they had no choice.
Yes, but the school system also had a choice as to whether they kept both schools open until the new facility is ready.

I don't have a dog in this hunt ... my comments on this matter are far less passionate than most others' here. I'm not complaining, either. I'm simply commenting on an advantage I think Mercer County has this season. There are some here that seem awfully defensive and sensitive about it.
I also think that football fans have a right to discuss the issue without being accused of being "haters" or "diminishing their accomplishments."

Noting ntrl's status, the Mods seem to agree with you westsider.:thumb:

With each victory the whining and crying will intensify. I haven't met the first fan yet of a team we beat that complained about the numbers advantage. That wont happen til the playoffs I guess.

Or maybe when you get into district play ...
Or maybe when you get into district play ...

Mercer lost one district game last season. So I guess we will wait and see what Newport says if we beat them. They can beat us so I see no excuses coming from them.
