Contrary to your beliefs, mercertitan, not everyone is crying, whining and making excuses or whatever you want to call it ... there are some of us that simply acknowledge that Mercer has somewhat of an advantage this year. Nothing more, nothing less.

What is the breakdown in number of starters for Mercer between the old Mercer and H-burg?

Ok then. If this were a first time occurance I could see your point. But, when some start saying that this might have been timed on purpose for football is just a disrepect to the two schools involved. So if they merged 6 months earlier you think that it would have been that much easier to fill spots on the schedule for all the teams involved? That would still be very difficult.

It's not far from 50/50 from what I can see.

Who made that accusation?

Ideally, it should have been done to take effect in 2007 ...

Why else would you assume that this was done in a rush?

Nothing in life seems to be fair. Like I said earlier they were preparing to start the construction of the new school. And yes they recieved more money for the added enrollment for a one phase construction. They go to two seperate schools now due to the fact that Mercer High is already crowded.

Little reason, then, that they couldn't have had those separate schools field separate teams for one more season.

Harrodsburg would have had their "last hurrah" season. The teams on Harrodsburg's schedule wouldn't have had to jump through hoops to fill the open date on their schedule. From looking at the scoreboard site, it appears that Carroll County wasn't able to find a 10th game.

The teams in Mercer County's district wouldn't have to try and beat an already-formidable opponent that now has the added advantage of numbers and enrollment.

And the new consolidated school could have moved into 3A (now 5A) next season with no controversy, competing in the class that fits their enrollment.

By the way ... what would the atmosphere had been like for the final Mercer-Harrodsburg game? I'm sure it would've been a night to remember?

Before I post this, please know that I am not speculating on the intent of the merger, nor the resources available to do it. I'm not jealous or a "hater". But the whole situation is interesting and since it impacts sports, fair game for conversation here on BluegrassPreps.com

I don't know that the merger had to take place to secure funding from the state, because this is not the way any consolidations I have ever been aware of have handled it. If that were the case, you can rest assured, other school systems would have figured out the way to get additional monies for construction. Is there any regulations or doccuments that support this? If so, it needs to be changed.

The natural order of things in those situations would be this

1. Vote to merge the school systems at a later date after the facilities are built. This could be the following school year or even 2 years down the road. This vote to merge would be enough to secure the additional monies and it would be essentially the same thing you have now.

2. Begin the construction of the new school, keep Harrodsburg and Mercer Co open as they were.

3. After the facilities are in place, THEN do the physical merge, including student body, athletics, extra curriculars.

This keeps all parties informed and everyone (including opponents who have to shuffle athletic schedules) knows what to expect. I'm not saying they did anything wrong, but they certainly did go about it in an unconventional way.

My sentiments exactly.

That would be a way to make everybody happy. I wish I really had all the answers. While some question all of this we have watched a really ugly (the merge) and tearful event transform into a possible blessing in disguise. From a town that was always split to a community that is coming together due to this team. It was always tough when they played cause in years past it wasn't always a pleasant rivalry. But now they are one. If you were from the area and were at the game friday against Boyle you would have seen the atmosphere. Electricifying. 7,000 give or take at the game. So as the numbers don't lie and I agree in a numbers game we are at an advantage no doubt. But no matter what the numbers in sports you have to go out and compete. That's easy to argue I know. I guess this is kinda like the unfair numbers with private schools except this is for only one year. Whatever happens with this team whether they win it all or get bounced early out of the playoffs I believe it will be the best thing to happen to these kids. They aren't running the score up against outmatched opponents. And they wont back down from the powerhouse teams if they run into them later on. This thread has no future for me. But, I understand everyone's concern. Good luck to all the teams the rest of the way.

My sentiments exactly.

I don't see Mercer winning this year or in 5A. They are a contender, but they have not been tested and their players don't get to play a full 4qtr ball game....wait until the playoffs and you will know what I am talking about.

Me either. I don't know if they have the talent. :p

I think Mercer is probably the best team in 2A, but that doesn't mean they will win the state championship. Things have a way of happening in the playoffs ...

I believe harrodsburg board voted to merge on on May 9 and the official merge took place on July 1.

No the talent is there I was just factoring in something nobody else has talked about also it is still early but we are on the back stretch.
